This course is designed to adequately meet the needs of all high school students, whether you intend
to pursue this field or just live within the midst of everyday change. Lab Chemistry is a general study of
science which deals with the characteristics of elements and other simple substances. The scientific
principles of their combination and behavior under various conditions are investigated on the theoretical as
well as experimental level.
What do I need on a daily basis?
- Your Textbook and Student Handbook
- A pencil and/or pen
- Notebook or a binder w/ paper
- Your Lab License
- Permission to use the Web (need an internet sticker on your ID)
- An open mind!
How can I succeed in this class?
- Expect/Respect!!!
- Be on time! The school policy on tardiness will be enforced. (3 tardies = 1 hour of detention)
- Be in class.
- Remember that studying chemistry is a journey into the unknown and that many concepts in
chemistry build on one another. Therefore, if you have an extended absence, you can quickly
fall behind.
- If you are absent from school, please check the assignments calendar and obtain any class
materials (assignments, handouts, etc.) that you need. The school's policy on make-up work
will be used.
- Assessment
- Homework -- It is of utmost importance that you complete all assignments. They reinforce the
concepts that we cover in class, and provide the opportunity to gain practice.
- Labs -- You will receive a separate grade for your written lab report and your lab performance.
- Tests and quizzes -- This is my opportunity to assess what you have learned, how you have
improved, and what we still need work on.
What not to do?
- Cheat or Lie.
- Be disrespectful of others (foul language, berating others, talking when somebody else is).
- Be disrespectful to the classroom and lab equipment. Note the school's policy on breakage: If you
- break something in lab, you are required to pay for replacement within the nine weeks grading
period.
- Pack up at the end of class before you are verbally dismissed.
- Break any school rules (see your Student Handbook).
