This page is to let you know and share
with you that despite heartache, pain, devastation, death of a child there
is a light at the end of each and everyone of our tunnels of life......Once
again let me stress this is in no way to promote or advocate of force my
personal beliefs on any one and as I said before if you are uncomfortable
PLEASE feel free to leave!!!!!! Also please note at no time will
I ever mention the Drunk Driver who did this to my family.......and my
reasoning for this is although he did drink and
drive and Murder my precious baby child........The
"ADULTS" who served the booze NEVER ,NEVER spent a day in jail let
alone no fines either!!!!! So on saying this, I must add that I hold
no animosity or hatred towards this young man, for this act.. I firmly
believe that the "ADULTS" should have had to take the responsibly for this....After
all how many 17-18 yr. old kids do you know who think they are 10 feet
tall and bullet proof? And if the opportunity is presented most youngsters
will at least try one drink.!!!
On September 14, 1986 in Lawton, Pa
{about 15 miles from here} both my sons were passengers in a pick up truck
driven by their "friend" who was Drunk and traveling at a high rate of
speed....{in excess of 74 mph}, they failed to negotiate a sharp curve,
left the road took out about 6 wooden guard rails and finally landed in
a tree.....above a deep side of a cliff. There were 6 kids all together
in this truck. My 17 yr. old son Derek was in the front passenger
seat and the other kids were in the back of the truck....Derek and his
"friends" were going to pick up my youngest son Gene age 15 yrs old who
was at a soccer tournament earlier in the day and then a pizza party at
the coaches house....He was supposed to be picked up by his Step-Sister
but she had been at the same party as Derek and
the driver and claimed to be to Drunk
to go get Gene. So the driver of this truck was asked to do it.. and with
good intentions he and the other kids set out to get Gene. When the kids
finally picked up Gene he jumped into the back of the truck which had a
fiberglass cap....and off they sped Gene apparently was scared because
of the speed he was driving and banged on the back window to ask him to
slow down but Gene was ignored and the driver kept his speed up, Gene said
he knew they were going to
"wreck" so asked the young ladies in
the back with him to lay down and he put both of his arms around the girls
to protect them....leaving himself with nothing to hold on to...and on
impact he was thrown from the back of the truck through the fiberglass
cap and into a tree, which impaled him, his death certificate states he
died from severe head trauma and died suddenly. To this day I still wonder
which hurt more the head injury or the tree limb which passed through his
small thin body..[It went through his side and exited through his back].
Back to suddenly or instantly in regards to death I once asked a Coroner
what that meant, he replied it usually meant anywhere from 15 to 45 seconds....well
I need to ask you did you ever stand in front of a microwave for that amount
of time? It can seem like eternity. Gene's body was not found right away....he
had been still in the tree while the courageous Firefighters and EMT were
trying to get the others to the hospital and still maintain some kind of
order in a very chaotic scene, it was not until all the kids were sent
to area hospitals and the truck was being literally pulled from the tree
it was embedded in. That the limb which had Gene held up in that tree finally
let go and they heard his lifeless body crash to the ground. This precious
child had everything to live for he loved school, sports, his only and
older brother, as well as his friends to which he was very popular with.
And as I go forth to face yet another day I WILL always remember the happiness
and joy Gene has brought into my life as well as all the lives he touched.
This world has truly lost a wonderful human being........ ALL DUE TO A
DRUNKEN DRIVER!!!!
