Explosion

October 16, 1999

I found out a little about the forces that form this part of the country. I don't have any news reports for I guess there was a 7 earthquake with the epic center at Joshua Tree, CA.

So, when my phone rang this morning I thought maybe someone was calling to see if I was okay. But, it was Jen.

Their trailer burned down last night. They got out but Dan has some pretty bad burns and Jeremiah has a few burns. Jenny was in the back bedroom. She is upset that they lost everything; I'm glad they are okay.
The earthquake and the explosion happened on the same day.

We have much to be thankful for.

My sister Jeanette wrote I did talk with Jenni and Dan on Sunday evening. Little miracles.....like the baby book and treasures that were in a box. The box was black and all that but inside the contents were perfect. The cross Grandma gave here hanging of the wall.....everything destroyed on that wall but not the cross. Dan's clothes in the dresser okay. Different plastic boxes destroyed, but not the contents. Thank you Lord.

Jen is finding out how generous the people of the area are.

Jeremiah's class took up a collection -- they bought him a game boy (wowowowow, I guess kids know what is important to kids) and they made him a quilt.

The place where Jen works put on a benefit -- she works at a gas station that has food. The bratwurst company donated the brats, the bread company donated the bread, and Pepsi donated the drinks. They got $500 from this. It will about pay for the environmental waste disposal of the residue from the fire.

Then, they found a trailer, the bank will give them a loan at 10% down, but they still needed money for the insurance (this one is insurable). Well, the student council put on a pancake breakfast and gave them $300.

It is still hard because Dan is off work because of his burns and he cannot do a lot of the work. So, Jen continues to work and also spend time cleaning up the debris. Jeremiah did return to school this week. Dan will be off another week. Jen, of course, needed her prescriptions for the heart medicine right the way after the fire and the pharmacist gave it to her without question.

The nun that Jen talks with gave them beds, blankets, and pillows because they were just remodeling at that time.

So, they are realizing the way people can help each other. They are trying to get settled before the cold sets in.

Jen says, "Mom, it is so wonderful. Each time I have another need, the money/help is there."
