Earthquake Explosion Family Addition weddings

Earthquake ! ! !
My sister Martha lives in Bullhead City, Arizona, which is just across the river from Needles, California (and Laughlin, Nevada).

(This is an e-mail I received from my sister Martha early Friday morning, October 24, 1999)

Did you feel it? What a 3 am alarm clock!

I had my AAA books stacked on the chest of drawers and many of them fell off.

It broke the ball off the arm in my toilet so that I had to turn the water off cause my bathroom floor was getting wet. The water just ran and ran.

Vases fell off the coffee table.

I ran to the bathroom but really wonder what safety there is there so as soon as it stopped I went down the stairs.

The caretakers said the news is reporting a 7 out of Joshua Tree. There have been several aftershocks. I wonder what it was like at the epicenter?

I thought I was dreaming so imagine my awakening. I was having a crazy dream.

Well, I am dressed now so I guess I will stay up and see if I hear anything. If you hear something, I'm up.
Martha surely has the experiences.

During that year she taught in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico, she got bit by a scorpion, had tarantulas in her apartment, an invasion of crickets, among other things. I've lived there for 5 years and, thankfully, have not experienced any of those things.

Then she moved to Arizona and now experiences an earthquake.

Explosion!
My neice, Jennifer (Martha's daughter), her husband, and son, live in Oklee, Minnesota (near Thief River Falls) in a mobile home (trailer).

It was getting cool the night of October 24th in northern Minnesota. While Dan was lighting the furnace, it exploded.

The all got out with the dog and one cat. Everything else was lost.

The following contains exerpts from an e-mail I received from my sister Martha.

I talked with Jen for quite a bit over the weekend.

She said that when Jeremiah ran to the neighbors to call, he didn't know or ask if he could use the phone. He just ran into their house, grabbed the phone, placed the call, and ran out again. Now, imagine you are sitting there watching TV and the neighbor kid runs in and uses your phone for a call without asking or talking to you and then runs back out. You know, they are all so lucky to be alive. I can't think of what might have happened without feeling a little sick.

Jen is also seeing how generous people are in that time of disaster. The Red Cross was there right the way helping them get settled for a week. Now, they have moved into an apartment. They can't stay there because they have pets -- the dog and one cat survived the fire -- one cat and the birds did not. There is no place in Oklee that takes pets, so I guess they will have to buy a trailer.

They have been looking for a trailer -- will have nothing but an electric heater (I wonder why). I bet it will be hard to feel safe again.

Jen did find some things that were salvagable. Some things that she thought she could save have that unforgetting smell -- it just doesn't go away. I know she will keep trying to find things to save.

She understands or kinda accepts that so many of the quality things I gave her and the keepsakes that I gave her, are gone. You know, we get too attached to things. What can I say. I also raised a "save it for the memory" kid.

One of the things they hadn't thought of was that they will probably need to meet special environmental hazard requirements to remove remains of the trailer and that could run into money, too. Hmmmm, always something else to think about.

Well, anyway, there is a lot of goodness and caring in people. I know, they say we just don't let ourselves give AND receive like we used to. I know it was always a lot easier for me to give help than it was for me to accept help.
