SunTea

Without the Sun

Simplify. Simplify. Simplify. Fall, 1999

Love the taste of suntea, but not enough sun?
Two easy ways to make suntea all year round and any time of the day or night.

One evening in Wichita, I was having guests for supper and had forgotten to make suntea. I remembered how warm the jar felt when I'd set it in the sun to make suntea. I turned on the hot water tap at the sink and decided to try making suntea. I filled the jar with hot tap water and added tea bags just as if I were making suntea and set the jar on the kitchen counter. In the time it took me to prepare supper I had delicious suntea.

Fill jar with hot tap water, add tea bags, let set on the kitchen counter for an hour or so.
This method I found in Prevention Magazine (8-98, p. 109).

Put 6 tea bags in a quart of water and set in the refrigerator for 8 hours or overnight.
This is much too strong for my taste. 2 regular size tea bags per quart seems to make suntea the strength I like.

This summer, in San Carlos, Mexico, I set my jars of water with tea in front of the house in the sun. The owner of the house we are renting said that the neighbor had called her to ask what I was doing.

Simplifying my life in the kitchen does not mean going back to doing everything from scratch. When my first bread maker wore out, I had to e-mail my sister immediately to start looking for one in the company store.

"Simplifying" to me means using fewer things, saving steps in the kitchen, or using things I have on hand instead of making a special trip to the store.

Making suntea as above is simpler since I don't need to plan ahead so far. On another occasion, I put the jars in the sun before going to work, but after setting outside all day, I didn't like the taste of the tea.
