...SEVERE DOWNBURST AND MICROBURST WINDS DID DAMAGE AROUND THE TOWN
OF LOCK HAVEN LATE THIS AFTERNOON...
DR. GREG FORBES...A PROFESSOR OF METEOROLOGY AT THE PENNSYLVANIA
STATE UNIVERSITY...TOURED THE LOCK HAVEN AREA THIS EVENING AND
CONFIRMED THAT THE DAMAGE DONE BY THUNDERSTORMS IN THAT AREA THIS
AFTERNOON WAS THE RESULT OF A DOWNBURST AND TWO MICROBURSTS.
DOWNBURSTS AND MICROBURSTS ARE BOTH CHARACTERIZED BY STRONG
STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS.
THE STORM HIT THE LOCK HAVEN AREA AROUND 4 PM. THREE DISTINCT AREAS
OF DAMAGE WERE SURVEYED. THE FIRST AREA OCCURRED ALONG A LINE FROM
3 MILES NORTHWEST OF LOCK HAVEN SOUTHEAST TO THE CITY OF LOCK HAVEN.
WINDS ESTIMATED AT 40 TO 72 MPH CAUSED TREE DAMAGE ALONG THAT PATH.
A SECOND AREA OF DAMAGE WAS NOTED FROM 1 MILE NORTHWEST OF THE
FLEMINGTON DISTRICT OF LOCK HAVEN TO 1 MILE NORTHEAST OF THE TOWN OF
MILL HALL. OVER 100 TREES WERE DOWNED IN THAT AREA...BY WINDS
ESTIMATED AT SPEEDS OF 73 TO 112 MPH.
A THIRD AREA OF DAMAGE WAS NOTED RIGHT THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE
FLEMINGTON DISTRICT OF LOCK HAVEN. AGAIN...EXTENSIVE TREE DAMAGE WAS
SEEN...AND A HOUSE AND CAR WERE BOTH DAMAGED WHEN TREES FELL ON TOP
OF THEM. WINDS IN THAT AREA WERE ESTIMATED AT 40 TO 72 MPH.
DIME-SIZED HAIL WAS ALSO REPORTED IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS WITH THE
STORM.
