American Bullfrog
Rana catesbeiana
With a body of up to 6 inches long and legs that can add up to 10 inches more, the American Bullfrog is by far the largest frog native to Pike County. Bullfrogs are voracious eaters. Insects, fish, frogs, mice, birds - basically, anything it can stuff into in its large mouth can be on its dinner menu.
Bullfrogs prefer warm still waters and are usually found in or on the edges of ponds and lakes.
Like all amphibians, the Bullfrogs start life as an egg. In less than a week, the eggs hatch into tadpoles. The tadpoles will remain in that state for two years before metamorphosing into frogs. The Bullfrogs may live to seven years or more in the adult form.
The Bullfrog's long legs allow it to jump up to six feet in a single bound. While these long legs give the Bullfrog a good method to avoid predators, they do have one drawback. The large legs of the Bullfrog are quite tasty and are served in fine restaurants around the country.
