"Trendy" Ska

Ok, ok, I know that right now the big thing to do is complain about the popular "trendy" ska bands they show on Mtv(you know who they are). However, when put into perspective you have to realize that the only harm this will do is a bunch of teenie-boppers running around and pretending to like ska because it's "cool." When Green Day sold 8 million albums a few years ago, everyone loved punk and it survived.Different Music becomes trendy at different times and you can bet that Ska will phase out sooner or later. What I'm trying to say is, a few mainstream bands aren't going to ruin the "grassroots" ska scene. The people who like Reel Big Fish and Save Ferris will generally stick to liking that particular genre of ska. Traditional and two tone bands may very well walk away from this crisis unscathed. I'm sure we all feel the same when we hear a trendy teenage girl say how much she likes "ska bands" like No Doubt and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, even though she doesn't usually like "alternative." Also I'm sure we all are angered when Matt Pinfield of Mtv says something like(this is not a direct quote) "ska has been around for almost twenty years, but it has taken the success of bands like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and No Doubt to make it an overnight success." People like these are ignorant towards ska even though they act as though they know what they're talking about. In short, we must spread our knowledge of ska as opposed to criticizing those who know little.
