Here is a listing of some animals and their meanings. Now this list that I have is mostly a Celtic based list. However I have tried to add some other meanings as well.
If you have an animal, or feel assosiated to a certain one, here you may find why that is...



  • Adder: The snake has been associated with wisdom and reincarnation, and cunning. It is also known for its striking abilty in defense. Also, the snake is for healing, as the two intertwined snakes on Herme's staff,which is used in the medical profession.
    It can also symbolize a temptation, like the serpent that tempted Eve. And to some the snake is also a symbol sexuality.

  • Badger: A badger is unyielding in the face of danger. It has a tenacity and a courage that cannot be matched.
    Although another meaning for a badger is to tease, when you badger someone, you annoy them.

  • Bat: A bat uses its radar to steer clear from obstacles and to keep from harms way. They also are a symbol of rebirth to some, the bat goes into a womb like cave to emerge once again.

  • Bear: The bear is a symbol of home, and security, and strength. Some also see the bear as a healer, for its feminine motherly like aspect. Because in the winter the bear retreats into a womb like place to come out again in the spring refreshed.

  • Bee: The bee is seen as an industrious animal. It is associated with production, and cooperation.

  • Blackbird: It is said that a blackbird is distinctive, and is its own being. Blackbirds are also seen as a symbol for strength and endurance.

  • Boar: Boars are known for their cunning and ferocious nature. Once one is enraged it will not give up a fight. They are also very sly animals, who can hide and hunt down prey.

  • Bull: The bull is a strong symbol of potency and strength. They are seen as protectors in a way as well. Plus, to some they are symbols of fertility, the masculine symbol.
    In Astrology the bull is associated with the sign Taurus. Taurians are tenacious, sensuous, earthy, and practical.

  • Butterfly: Butterflies are carefree, they float around without a worry. They are also seen as a symbol for new beginnings, like when a butterfly emerges from its cocoon, it can can mean renewed awareness, and life.

  • Cat: Cats are very strong animals, ready to protect and defend what is theirs, yet also knows when to back away. They are very independant, and can take care of themselves quiet well. Some see the cat as the feminine side as well, the Egyptian Goddess Bast was seen as a Woman with a cats head.

  • Cock/Rooster: These are where the expression 'cocky' comes from. They are arrogant and flaunt it all.

  • Cow: The cow symbolizes contentedness, and the ability to do everyday chores. Cows themselves are very placid and peacefull, they represent patience and passive endurance.

  • Crane: A crane is associated with Magick, the moon inperticular and the Triple Goddess. The are deep creatures who move with grace and dignity.

  • Crow: Crows are very skillfull, cunning, and single-minded. They often are seen as bringers of messages.

  • Deer: Keen scent and swiftness are the deers best attributes. They are also gentle creatures, and gracefull, and shy. They are able to quickly blend into the surroundings as not to be seen. They have sharp eyes and are always on alert to dangers that may be near.

  • Dog: Dogs represent companionship, and loyalty, friendship and protection. Their tracking skills and scent symbolize them as well.

  • Dolphin: Dolphins are extremely inteligent, with their own language and even they willingness to befriend other animals. They are friendly creatures, and have even been known to help out drowning people. They are also associated with the ocean, they can go to great depths at a time before needing air again.

  • Dragon: There are many different kinds of dragons out there. But most dragons symbolize power in the elements. It is also known for its power of the subconscious, for the riches that lie within, as well as without. Head to my Myths and Legends page to find out more on dragons.

  • Eagle: Eagles are known for their long lives and keen sight. They are also associated with swiftness, strength, and knowledge.

  • Fox: Cunning and sly, a fox can make a fool out of someone who doesn't know what they are doing. They are able to watch and observe others while all the while being unobserved themselves. Foxes are very intelligent, they are able to avoid dangers and have good senses of smell, sight, and hearing.

  • Frog: Frogs blend into their environments, and are able to leap great distances at a time. They symbolize patience and stillness, and then focus.

  • Griffyn: A Griffyn has a body of a lion, with wings and head of an eagle. This animal teaches you to combine your characteristics to make a working whole. These are great symbols of Magick and power.

  • Hare/Rabbit: Timid creatures, hares lead peaceful lives. They are quick and smart, but can be mean if you trap them because they will do all they can to break free.

  • Hawk: Hawks have clear sightedness and good memories. They can see great distances to find prey.

  • Heron: These birds can stand still for long periods of time so they can catch their food. They are slow and methodical, stately and dignified.

  • Horse: Horses are considerd faithful guides. They symbolize stamina, endurance, and faithfulness.

  • Lizard: They are quick and able to adapt and blend into their surroundings. When trouble is near though, they usually scamper away.

  • Lynx: These cats can adapt to any condition. They have the same attributes as the cat (see above) and are at times just as playful as one.
