The Authority: Who says comics are for the braindead.

My latest obsession has been, surprisingly, a comic book. "The Authority", released by WildStorm publications has captured my imaginiation and drawn me into the world of superheros.
The fact that two members of the team happen to be a gay couple also helps me settle in and feel comfortable reading such subject matter.

I was first introduced to this publication after watching Good News Week where the host brought it up in his usual skit filler. It sounded funny and my curiosity was perked so I did alittle searching on the net and found out where my closest comicbook store was.
Then I went out and spent some money. Buying issues 3,4 and 5 left me sated for awhile but I wasn't hooked yet. Then a wonderfull invention called the "book" came to my attention. Bound sets of issues put together to make a book of 2 stories, 4 issues in each story. I badgered the store constantly over the phone trying to get my hands on a copy of the first book. The result after waiting for it to be shipped in was "Relentless" issues 1 through 8 including the controversial "first (published) kiss" between two male characters by a mainstream US comic house.

For awhile I was happy, not looking for any more issues due to lack of time, motivation or funds. Then I started a new job, afew blocks from the comic store, so after my first pay cheque I went back into that great store. Lo and behold the second book had been released containing issues 9 through 16. Thus I purchased "Under new Management" and saw that the writing and artistic teams had changed. Sadly in my oppinion this lowered the quality of the artwork, but it was replaced with an Apollo and Midnighter that openly express their love for each other when they aren't out fighting baddies but even when they are on duty if one of them gets badly beaten the other cradels him close and sheds a grief filled tear.

I love every second of it and I hope you will look them up. It's well worth the trouble.
