The Copse Corpse

Part five

After receiving confirmation of the post mortem, Helen and Maddy went down to the police station yet again. In the past four weeks, it seemed that they had never been out of the station. Maddy was constantly being asked questions, Helen was being exposed to the same treatment and both of them couldn't stop crying. Jonathan was just glad to go back home. He'd never had to endure to crying women at the same time.
The medical officer had taken the time to come to the police station to discuss the results of the tests. He introduced himself as Dr. Maxwell. He ushered them into an interview room and slid the sign to 'Engaged'.
Maddy and Helen scraped the chairs from underneath the table and perched themselves on them. Dr. Maxwell leaned up against the far wall so that he was facing the two inquirers. The doctor fell silent and Maddy began to grow impatient.
"Well..." began Maddy "...What have you found. I think that anything you have to tell us will only help us deal with the tragic loss of a dear friend." Helen turned to face Maddy. She knew Maddy had been reading something. She didn't normally splurt out such crap. The doctor opened the file and sat down. As he sat down he pushed his glasses up his nose so that he did not have to look over them to see Maddy and Helen.
"It is just as suspected. The bullet pierced his skull and entered the tree he was lying by." He threw an evidence bag onto the table. "According to the forensics, the bullet matches the gun and the same type of bullets were found in the remaining magazine."He picked up the evidence bag and replaced it in the inside pocket of his tweed jacket. He got up again from the chair and began to walk around the outside of the room. Maddy and Helen had to keep turning their heads so that they were always eye to eye with him.
"We also did a toxicology screen and found high levels of alcohol in his blood. It seems that he was killed while intoxicated." Helen began to cry but Maddy was being to observant and had noticed something that the doctor had said. "Excuse me Dr. Maxwell, but did you just say killed." Dr. Maxwell placed the file on the table. "That's correct Miss. Magellan. The trajectory of the bullet indicates that he could not have inflicted that wound on himself. It seems that the bullet entered his head here..." he points to the base of his neck, under his jaw bone, on the right hand side of his face "...and came out here." He points to the a part of the skull, just above the ear, on the left side of his head. "When you found the body Miss. Magellan, you said that the gun was in his left hand. Is that correct." "Absolutely." Helen gave a quick blubber and Maddy put her arm around her. "If so then the wound was not self-inflicted. If it were, then the bullet would have come out higher than the point indicated." Helen was still crying, but now she was leaning against Maddy's shoulder. "Thank you doctor. If that's all..." Dr. Maxwell nodded his head "...then we'll leave. My friend needs a bit of home comforts." She made here way to the door. Dr. Maxwell gained Maddy's attention. "I'm terribly sorry Miss. Magellan." Maddy gave him a wave of acknowledgment and exited the room. The doctor sat down and grabbed a silver plated flask from his trouser pocket. He took a swig and replaced it.
