Kiefer Sutherland - Grand Marshal
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500
Pocono Raceway
August 3, 2008

This web page contains Kiefer Sutherland photos from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500.

The race was held at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, August 3, 2008. Kiefer served as the Grand Marshal. Needless to say, he sounded powerful when he said those infamous words........."GENTLEMEN, START YOUR ENGINES!"

Kiefer's upcoming movie, “Mirrors,” was featured on J.J. Yeley’s No. 96 DLP HDTV Toyota Camry during the race. "Mirrors" will be in theatres August 15, 2008.

J.J. Yeley finished 39th after running out of fuel. Maybe they should have gotten Kiefer's advise on when to pit! Carl Edwards, or as I affectionately call him "Flipper" won the race.

If you are a fellow NASCAR fan, you might want to visit my Mark Martin web site. You will be able to view it here. Hopefully you will find something that will interest you.

Carl Edwards: Winning Team Press Conference - Question regarding Kiefer Sutherland
    Pocono Raceway
    August 3, 2008

Question: You did get to talk to Kiefer Sutherland and he mentioned you were a big 24 fan. You did get a chance to go onto the set. Do you have any thoughts on him being grand marshal today?

Carl Edwards: It was very cool having Kiefer here. I had not seen him since I got the chance to be on their show. Had a really good time doing that. He's a really cool guy. He's a real nice guy. Coolest part was when we got to the set, and he shows up in this little hot rod Chevelle convertible, mag wheels, dual exhausts. First thing he does, Come check out my car. We're over there with the hood up.

He's a cool guy. It was neat to have him today. My girlfriend sent me a text and said he was cheering for me. That was really neat of him.

Jack Bauer’s new challenge: 24 at Pocono
    By Paul Sokoloski

Not even the kind of merciless agony inflicted during an interrogation by fictional federal agent Jack Bauer would cause NASCAR drivers to break.

“Unfortunately, they deal with torture on the track all day long,” said Bauer, a.k.a. Kiefer Sutherland. “So it’s not going to help.”

It seems Sutherland, the Emmy Award-winning actor who portrays Bauer in the highly-popular Fox Television series “24,” knows as much about real life racing as he does about extracting information from make-believe enemies on TV.

Sutherland did the voice-over for the 2004 3D film “NASCAR: The IMAX Experience.” He received a visit on the “24” set from NASCAR driver Carl Edwards a few years ago. And he’s been a racing fan since watching Danny Sullivan pull a Jack Bauer-like escape by whirling through a wild 360-degree spin while overtaking Mario Andretti to win the 1985 Indy 500 in the famous Spin-and-Win race.

“I thought that was the coolest thing,” said Sutherland, who also is a big-screen actor and will star in the upcoming supernatural thriller “Mirrors.”

Sunday afternoon, Sutherland dropped out of the sky in a helicopter and landed at Pocono Raceway. But this was no secret mission. Sutherland was simply serving as Race Grand Marshal for the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500, bellowing, “Gentlemen, start your engines!” in his toughest Jack Bauer voice to open a race won by Edwards.

TV audiences all over the country have been captivated by Sutherland’s all-business approach for seven years.

In his pulse-racing television show, Sutherland’s character Bauer is regularly thrust into saving the nation from impending terrorist attacks.

Doomsday is always a day away, giving Bauer 24 hours to complete his mission - hence the show’s title.

Previously on 24, Jack Bauer has helped save the U.S. from nuclear meltdowns and nerve gas attacks. He’s watched in horror as one president’s plane was shot down and another former president was shot dead. He’s been set up, sold out and stung by the same government he tries mightily to protect, all the while barreling through political red tape and road blocks to foil sinister plots and emerge as a national hero.

In real life, Republican and Democratic politicians alike have applauded Sutherland’s character, who the actor insists is completely bipartisan.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain once made a visit to the “24” set, while former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, called it his favorite show of all time.

“That’s what I love about our show,” said Sutherland, calling his lead role a “Gift of a lifetime.”

In fact, that’s the same feeling Sutherland believes NASCAR drivers shared Sunday as he made a pre-race tour of the garage area at Pocono.

“I’m just amazed at how calm they are,” Sutherland said. “They’re a couple of hours away from putting their lives on the line and they seem like it’s any other day.”

Now, that’s the kind of composure under duress that even a high-risk character like Jack Bauer can admire.

    Kiefer stops by

NASCAR races have become popular vehicles for TV and movie stars to promote their latest projects.

Kiefer Sutherland was named the grand marshal for today's race at Pocono, just in time to promote his upcoming feature film "Mirrors."

He didn't give us 24 hours or even 24 minutes, but the star of Fox's "24" was a pleasant, cordial guest in the Media Center during the long pre-race period.

"The helicopter ride here was pretty cool," he said. "I learned that this was one of the last family-owned tracks in the country and the steeples you could see off in the distance made it look like Churchill Downs. I heard that the grandfather who owns this track [Dr. Joseph Mattioli] doesn't let his wife go to the horse racetrack, so he brought the track to her."

Sutherland toured the garage area and pits and visited J.J. Yeley, whose car is connected with "Mirrors."

"I'm just amazed how calm all of those guys are," he said. "They are just a couple of hours away from putting their lives on the line, and yet it seems like any other day to them."

When asked to talk about "Mirrors" which will be released on Aug. 15, he said, "We had a lot of fun doing it. I wouldn't be here unless I wanted people to see it. This [the Pocono Raceway] has kind of taken over the day for me and I'm not even thinking about the film. If you check out "Mirrors," it's a scary film. If you're not into that, please don't see it because it will freak you out. If you are into it, go see it."

When asked about "24" Sutherland, who stars as relentless special agent Jack Bauer, called it "a gift of a lifetime, a blessing."

Sutherland said he has been involved with NASCAR for several years since doing the voiceover for the Imax film that was done on the history of the sport.

"One of the things I've always loved about NASCAR is that there's a sense of competition that was born with one family going against another family and another family and another family and they're all from the same hometown and they ultimately got together and went down to Daytona to race on the beach," Sutherland said. "That basic sense of competition hasn't changed over the last 75 years. So, I have followed NASCAR.

But Sutherland, who has also been seen at Lakers games over the years, likes another brand of racing.

"The first racing event I ever saw that turned me on to racing was actually the Indy 500 where Danny Sullivan spun out with a 360-degree spin and still beat Andretti," Sutherland said. "That brought me into racing and then the NASCAR things I have done got me familiar with some of the drivers. Every Teamster who worked on our show [24] was a big NASCAR fan and it became a talking tool for all of us. No matter what you're role was on our show, it was something you could talk about."

Sutherland has had his share of troubles with alcohol and the law, but on this day he was on his best behavior and even stood alongside Cindy McCain, the wife of presidential candidate John McCain, as they greeted drivers during the pre-race introductions.
