CONGRATULATIONS TO MARTIN FREEMAN!

This talented British actor will portray Bilbo Baggins in the movie version of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. The movie is the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Martin Freeman's career is a successful one. I came to know him as Tim Canterbury in the British version of The Office. Tim was cute, witty and a bit of a prankster. Because of those combinations, Tim became my favorite Wernham Hogg employee.

With the success of The Office, came various movie roles for Freeman. The movies include Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, Love Actually, Confetti, The Good Night, Nightwatching, and Nativity!. He was also in a recent play called Clybourne Park. He was recast due to his obligations to The Hobbit.

His recent role as Dr. Watson, Sherlock's associate in PBS' Masterpiece Mystery! Sherlock, has had excellent reviews. It is now available on DVD. It has been announced there will be a season two for Sherlock.

It goes without saying that Martin Freeman will be a very busy man. I wish him all the best and look forward to his new role as Bilbo Baggins. He will make a very convincing hobbit! - LMR

Release dates for the two-part movie are as follows:

Part One: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey release date is December 2012.

Part 2: The Hobbit: There and Back Again release date is December 2013.

If you are a LOTR fan like I am, the anticipation is building!

Please visit my pages for Martin Freeman (Home Page, The Hobbit and Sherlock). Just lick on the images below and they will take you there. I have recently made changes to my sites (layout, links). Hopefully, you will some something of interest.

'Breaking Dawn' rises to $283.5M worldwide debut
By David Germain - AP Movie Writer
    Associated Press
    November 20, 2011

"The Twilight Saga" has staked out another huge opening with a $139.5 million first weekend domestically and a worldwide launch of $283.5 million.

The domestic total gives "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" the second-best debut weekend for the franchise, after the $142.8 million launch for 2009's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon.""Breaking Dawn" did more than half of its business, $72 million, on opening day Friday, while the movie's debut weekend was the fifth-best on record.

Opening in 54 overseas markets, "Breaking Dawn" pulled in $144 million internationally, according to studio estimates Sunday.

But the Warner Bros. dancing penguin sequel "Happy Feet 2" stumbled in its debut, pulling in just $22 million over opening weekend. That's barely half what the first film in the animated franchise earned in its 2006 opening.

The comparison is even worse considering the original did not have the sequel's price advantage for 3-D screenings, which cost a few dollars more than 2-D shows.

The previous weekend's No. 1 movie, Relativity Media's action tale "Immortals," fell to third-place with $12.3 million, raising its domestic haul to $53 million.

George Clooney had a great start with Fox Searchlight's comic drama "The Descendants," which broke into the top-10 despite playing in just a handful of theaters.

"The Descendants" finished at No. 10 with $1.2 million in 29 theaters, averaging a whopping $42,150 a cinema. That compares to an average of $34,351 in 4,061 theaters for "Breaking Dawn."

Directed by Alexander Payne ("Sideways"), the film stars Clooney as a distressed dad tending to his daughters after his wife falls into a coma from a head injury. The film expands to about 400 theaters Wednesday.

In an industry whose main audience is young males, "Twilight" is a rare blockbuster franchise driven by female viewers. Distributor Summit Entertainment reported that women and girls made up 80 percent of the audience for "Breaking Dawn."

The popularity of "Twilight" has left many men scratching their heads, even those involved in releasing the movies.

"I'm 53 years old, and I haven't figured it out yet," said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Summit. "It relates really to young girls and things that are important to them, their romantic ideas of love and relationships, without getting so physical, at least on screen, that it becomes a worry for their parents."

"Breaking Dawn" has brooding teen Bella (Kristen Stewart) marrying vampire lover Edward (Robert Pattinson), whose family strikes an uneasy alliance with jealous werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) to protect the bride and the baby she's carrying.

The movie's big start points to even better business for next year's "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," the finale in the five-film series based on Stephenie Meyer's best-selling novels.

"Breaking Dawn" was a windfall for Hollywood in general, whose domestic revenues continue to trail 2010's despite rosy projections last spring of a record box-office year.

Domestic business totaled $222 million, up 14 percent from the same weekend last year, when "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" led with $125 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

The penguins of "Happy Feet 2" were left in the cold compared with the big debut for the first film, a critical favorite that won the Academy Award for feature animation.

The sequel, featuring returning voice stars Elijah Wood and Robin Williams, received mixed to bad reviews. Still, Warner Bros. reported it earned high marks from audiences, which could keep it afloat in the coming weeks.

"We honestly feel we'll pick up some steam and play some catch-up as we get into the holidays," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner.

But the competition for family audiences turns intense in the next few days with Martin Scorsese's youthful adventure "Hugo," the musical comedy "The Muppets" and the animated holiday tale "Arthur Christmas" all opening Wednesday for the busy Thanksgiving weekend.

The newcomers, combined with "Breaking Dawn," could lift Hollywood above the Thanksgiving record set in 2009, when "New Moon" paced the industry to a $273 million domestic haul from Wednesday to Sunday.

"This could be one of the greatest movie-going weekends ever in the midst of a year that has really had its ups and downs at the box office," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

    1. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," $139.5 million ($144 million international)

    2. "Happy Feet 2," $22 million ($2.6 million international)

    3. "Immortals," $12.3 million ($11.9 million international)

    4. "Jack and Jill," $12 million ($1.6 million international)

    5. "Puss in Boots," $10.7 million ($2.4 million international)

    6. "Tower Heist," $7 million ($4.5 million international)

    7. "J. Edgar," $5.9 million.

    9. "In Time," $1.7 million ($4.2 million international)

    10. "The Descendants," $1.2 million

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

    1. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," $144 million

    2. "The Adventures of Tintin," $21.7 million

    3. "Immortals," $11.9 million

    4. "Real Steel," $6.9 million

  • The Associated Press: 'Eclipse' howls past midnight record with $30M
    June 30, 2010

LOS ANGELES — "The Twilight Saga" has rung up another record midnight hour.

"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" took in more than $30 million from midnight screenings Wednesday, according to distributor Summit Entertainment.

That surpassed the previous midnight record of $26.3 million set on opening day last November by its predecessor, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon."

Summit was still counting the numbers and was not expected to have a final overnight number until Thursday. But Summit reported the figure was likely to come in significantly higher than $30 million.

The huge start for "Eclipse" puts the latest chapter in the vampire-romance series on track for one of the biggest opening days ever.

"New Moon" also holds that record, taking in $72.7 million in its first day.

The new midnight record is even more impressive considering "Eclipse" managed it in the middle of the week. "New Moon" opened on Friday, typically a busier day at theaters.

Fans lined up Tuesday hours ahead of the first midnight show times for "Eclipse," which continues the story of brooding teen Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and her love triangle with vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).

With the Fourth of July weekend ahead, "Eclipse" is positioned for a colossal first five days. The record five-day haul for a movie opening on Wednesday is $200 million for last year's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."

'Eclipse' earns $30M at early screenings
    June 30, 2010

LOS ANGELES, June 30 (UPI) -- "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" earned more than $30 million at the North American box office for midnight Tuesday performances.

The Hollywood Reporter said the amount is unprecedented for a movie opening at that time and day.

"Eclipse" predecessor "New Moon," the second film in the "Twilight" franchise, scored a record in November 2009 by raking in $26.3 million at midnight Thursday performances, the entertainment industry newspaper noted.

The record for midnight box office was previously held by "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which earned $22.2 million from its earliest screenings in July 2009, the report said.

My comments regarding the movie Eclipse: This movie is the best (so far) in the Twilight saga. I'll give the movie a 4 out of 5 stars. Eclipse (the book) is my favorite.

First off, the tension between Edward, Jacob and Bella was a thrill to watch. Let the games begin!

Here are a few scenes that I enjoyed. Actually, any scene that includes Jacob would be a favorite :)

Bella hurts her hand (OUCH) when she punches Jacob's face after he kisses her. That was a good laugh.

After the kiss: Watching Charlie pull Edward and Jacob apart before they tear each other apart.

Charlie trying to be the good parent when talking with Bella about the facts of life. That situation was awkward and funny.

The tent scene was most enjoyable. Jacob and Edward get to know each other better. A few laughs were thrown in for good measure.

Bella asks Jacob to kiss her. Poor Edward LOL.

I enjoyed the training scenes with the Cullens and Jacob's pack. Combining vampires and wolves is an unlikely scenario, but it worked. They were certainly ready to fight the newbies and Victoria (off with her head!).

As I have mentioned before, I'm a stickler to detail. A two thumbs up regarding the pasts of Jasper and Rosalie. The story of Jacob's ancestors was included, but it was cut down and centered around the third wife. That was done I'm sure because of the comparison between the third wife and Bella's character.

Jacob gives Bella her graduation present. How could you not love the homemade bracelet he made for her? He put his heart and soul into carving that little wolf. I'm partial to Jacob. He's real, genuine, sweet, warm and part human - a living human! Bella does not deserve him. She needs to be with Edward - her partner in brooding.

Jacob talking with Bella after he was injured is a favorite scene of mine. The exchange between the two was more detailed in the book. It starts on page 591. Here is part of that exchange that I love (Page 599-600).

Jacob: “He’s like a drug for you Bella.” His voice was still gentle, not at all critical. “I see that you can’t live without him now. It’s too late. But I would have been healthier for you. Not a drug; I would have been the air, the sun.”

Bella: The corner of my mouth turned up in a wistful half-smile. “I used to think of you that way, you know. Like the sun. My personal sun. You balanced out the clouds nicely for me.”

Jacob: “The clouds I can handle. But I can’t fight with an eclipse."

    That exchange says everything.

In the end, we see Bella agreeing to wear her engagement ring from Edward. The scene was very sweet.

In the meantime, I'm going to read Breaking Dawn.....again! I need to look into all of the vampire covens again. At least there is a list breaking them down by location. I'm wondering how detailed they will be in the Breaking Dawn movies. We shall see.

The vampire and werewolf movie "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" finished first at the weekend box office taking in $140.7 million. The Summit Entertainment film's box office take was the third-largest on record for a movie in its opening weekend. Only Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight" ($158.4) and Sony's "Spider-Man 3" ($151.1 million), have made more in a single weekend.

My comments regarding the movie Twilight: I've read the Twilight Saga over again many times. I was able to view New Moon over the Thanksgiving holiday. Cheers to Taylor Lautner. I was impressed with the way he brought Jacob Black to the forefront. Watching the tension grow between Jacob Black and Edward Cullen gave the movie an extra punch that Twilight lacked. I was also impressed with the special effects in New Moon. All in all, I would give New Moon a four out of five stars. Why four? Books naturally have more detail in relation to the story line and characters. Each book would need to be done as a mini-series to keep them true.

Just a note: As you can see below, I'm partial to Jacob Black. LOL

Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black - Eclipse

Let's face it. You can't ignore the shirtless Jacob Black. Does he even own a shirt? Edward wanted to know. To be honest, I like Jacob in his black t-shirt. Better yet is him leaning against his motorcycle as shown in the movie poster below.

  • Fantasy films earn overdue Oscar honor
    By Terry Pace
    TimesDaily.com
    March 5, 2004

As Peter Jackson indicated so softly and succinctly Sunday night, Hollywood is no longer afraid of the "f" word – and by that, of course, I mean the long-forbidden genre of fantasy.

For the first time in its 76-year history, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences overcame a perplexing and longstanding prejudice as voters finally awarded a fantasy film the Oscar for best picture.

"King Kong," "The Wizard of Oz" and "Star Wars" are considered three of the most enduring and influential films of all time, but none among that mighty trio was named best picture.

This year, however, Oscar honored "The Return of the King," the breathtaking finale of "The Lord of the Rings," Jackson's majestic movie trilogy. In addition to best picture, the "King" dominated all 11 of its categories, matching the record of all-time Oscar champions "Ben-Hur" and "Titanic."

Released over three successive Christmas seasons, Jackson's trio of epics – "The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001), "The Two Towers" (2002) and "The Return of the King" – was based on the beloved trilogy of fantasy novels penned by Anglo-icon J.R.R. Tolkien.

Seven years ago, Jackson and New Line Cinema launched a risky venture on virtually every front when they accepted the unprecedented challenge of filming the "Rings" saga. Cynics claimed it couldn't be done. Even after half a century, they argued, cinematic science had not reached a point where special effects could capture Tolkien's vision on screen and create his magical Middle-earth.

Perhaps even more daunting, Tolkien's books are cherished by so many readers -- three generations' worth, in fact -- that the hopes, expectations and preconceptions among millions of Middle-earth fans soared to alarming levels.

Fearing a potential travesty, New Line sought ways to minimize the risk and maximize the potential. To save money, Jackson (who directed and co-wrote the films) gathered his actors and crew together, completing principal photography for all three films in one marathon shooting schedule.

Then, in the 12 months between theatrical release dates, Jackson worked feverishly with his editors and special-effects artists to finish the painstaking task of post-production work.

Ultimately, the blood, sweat and tears invested in "The Lord of the Rings" – not to mention the imagination, soul and multi-million-budget bankroll –paid off in every way. One by one, Jackson delivered three stunning cinematic achievements -- each faithful to the spirit of Tolkien -- that grew richer and stronger as the trilogy progressed.

Critics hailed them, Tolkien readers adored them, and ticket-buyers transformed them into a box-office phenomenon.

Now, with their final bow, Oscar has embraced them, crowning a scruffy, soft-spoken New Zealander the once and future king of movie fantasy.

    Long may he reign.

    THE BIG BANG THEORY

I am a new-comer to The Big Bang Theory. Smart is the new sexy! LOL

Thankfully, TBS and FOX have been showing seasons 1 - 4. I hope TBS will be showing season 5 in the near future.

The comedy is unique, quirky and educational (thanks to Sheldon Cooper and his collegues). The actors and their characters kick that "same old thing" idea to the side. They had me coming back for more. I knew I was hooked.

Everyone knows Sheldon Cooper stands out from the rest of the crowd.

Sheldon is smart. Too smart for his own good. He can actually be boring with all the knowledge he has. Is he part computer robot? Maybe a freak of nature? LOL

Yet again, he can show human emotions, even though he doesn't understand why he has such tendencies. One minute you think he is a good guy. You want to like him. Then he throws a curve ball. He can be somewhat mean and childlike, like a spoiled little brat. Maybe "man-child" would be a good description for him.

He does run to Penny when he has a dilema. She can be somewhat of a "mother" figure to him at times. I like when she calls him "sweetie". Their relationship can be be good or bad. I like to think of the good.

How could you not love Sheldon's cute, yet annoying, "Penny, Penny, Penny" knock? You never knew what was going to happen when Penny answered her door!

Sheldon assisted (as did the others) with her Penny Blossoms. We know how that ended!

When she was injured and needed to go to the hospital, he drove her there. What a trip that was! I loved when he was helping her dress! Very cute.

They also have a special relationship in regards to "Soft Kitty". How many of you now sing that to someone when they are sick? Admit it! I know you do! LOL

The Big Bang Theory - Bare Naked Ladies

Our whole universe was in a hot dense state
Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait...
    The Earth began to cool
    The autotrophs began to drool
    Neanderthals developed tools
We built a wall (we built the pyramids)
Math, science, history, unravelling the mysteries
That all started with the big bang!

Since the dawn of man is really not that long
As every galaxy was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song
A fraction of a second and the elements were made
    The bipeds stood up straight
The dinosaurs all met their fate
They tried to leap but they were late
And they all died (they froze their asses off)
    The oceans and pangea

See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya
Set in motion by the same big bang!

It all started with the big BANG!

It's expanding ever outward but one day
It will cause the stars to go the other way
Collapsing ever inward, we won't be here, it wont be hurt
Our best and brightest figure that it'll make an even bigger bang!

Australopithecus would really have been sick of us
Debating out while here they're catching deer (we're catching viruses)
    Religion or astronomy, Encarta, Deuteronomy
It all started with the big bang!

Music and mythology, Einstein and astrology
It all started with the big bang!
It all started with the big BANG!

    THAT 70'S SHOW

I'm a fan of the That 70's Show. It makes me wonder...

How many times did Red call Eric a "dumb ass"? How many "burns" occurred? How many times did Hyde punch, smack and wrestle Kelso (Ow! My eye!)? How much candy did Fez consume? How many popsicles were eaten? Did the cast really eat at the kitchen table? Hyde ate up a storm! The scenes with waffles, brownies and cake always makes me hungry! How much stash did the "circle" share? How did their futures turn out?

The list goes on and on!

    Not a thing to do
    But talk to you
    Not a thing to do
    Out in the street
    Oh yeah!

    Mom and Dad
    Live upstairs
    The music's loud
    So we don't care
    Nixon's gone
    But rock lives on
    Oh yeah!

    We're still rocking in Wisconsin
    We're all alright!
    We're all alright!
    Yeah!

    I'll steal the car
    And drive on down
    Pick you up
    And we'll drive around
    Not a thing to do
    But talk to you
    Not a thing to do
    Oh yeah!

    We're still rocking in Wisconsin
    We're all alright!
    We're all alright!
    Yeah!

    Oh yeah!
    Oh yeah!

    Hello, Wisconsin!

If you like little murder mysteries, I would recommend M.C. Beaton's books.

M.C. Beaton (Marion Chesney) is the author of the highly acclaimed Hamish Macbeth mystery series. Born in Scotland, Beaton now lives in the Costwolds.
