Chapter 17

I started getting ready around 5:00. I had decided to wear a red satin Chinese embroidered dress. (Think Geri in Spice World in the scene where Cliffors tells them they can't have the morning off.) To fit with the look, I put my hair in a bun and crossed two chopstick type things in it. I also wore matching platform sandals.

I went to Ronnie's house at 6:00. We were leaving early because we figured it would take us a while to walk to the Hanson house in our shoes. She was wearing a black sleevless dress with a silver glitter butterfly on it. She had clipped little butterflies all in her hair, and she was wearing high heeled shoes with a wire the wrapped around her leg. (Think Posh Spice in practically every interview.)

As it turned out, we were lucky we gave ourselves so much time to walk. We didn't get there until 6:25, and it usually takes ten minutes to walk to Zac's house. We were the last ones there.

Jill was wearing a black baby tee with a cat in silver rhinstones. She also had on a long black skirt with black mesh over it. She had her curly red hair in a french twist with a few strands loose around her face. For shoes, she had on black, chunky loafers bacause, as she put it, she'd kill herself if she tried to walk in those "things" that Ronnie and I were wearing. She really didn't need platforms anyway, she was taller than me when I was wearing them.

Marc was wearing a tight black t-shirt and black pants. He had his reddish brown hair slicked back, for he was trying to look "macho".

Zac was wearing a orange satin short sleeved shirt and shiny silver cargo pants. He had hir hair down with no noticible styling gel. He must have loaned his to Marc.

Taylor was wearing black shiny pants with a beidge crushed velvet pullover shirt. He had his long hair pulled back in a neat ponytail.

Isaac had on red leather pants and a white t-shirt. Over the t-shirt, he wore a black saitn shirt unbuttoned. His wavy hair was hanging loose at his shoulders.

When we were ready to leave, Mrs. Hanson insisted on getting a group picture. "You kids all look so nice," she said.

"Honey, you didn't make this big of a deal when the boys went to the Grammys," said Mr. Hanson.

"Oh, Walker, I did so."

"If you say so."

After Mrs. Hanson took the picture, we all got in the Hansons' minivan, and Isaac drove to the dance.

"Well, Ike, how do you plan on getting us all in?" asked Zac.

"Let me handle this," said Ike and went to talk to the man at the door. We could see them talking, making hand motions, and once Isaac pointed right at me. When they were done, Isaac came over to me and said that the man wanted to talk to me. "Say what seems logical," he told me.

I walked over to the man.

"Are you Zellary?"

I nodded.

"That young man said you're his cousin from Britain and you're home schooled there."

"Yes," I said in a British accent, "I have a French nanny who teaches me."

"Aren't you a little old for a nanny?"

"Me mum and dad are very over-protective."

"How old are you?"

"Fifteen."

"You only look thirteen."

"Would I be allowed to wear these shoes if I were thriteen?"

"I guess not. Okay, you can go in."

I made a motion for everyone to follow me and walked in the door. When we were out of earshot of the man, I said to Ike, "Where did you get that idea?"

"I dunno."

"Well from now on if anyone asks, I'm fifteen."

"Okay."

"Hey, look at her!" said Taylor.

"Yea, she's hot!" said Ike.

"She's also comming over here," said Marc.

"She's mine," said Tay.

"Mine," said Ike.

"Ike, when was the last time a chick picked you over me?"

"Grandma always liked me best."

"Well, get ready to be rejected."

The girl reached us.

"Hi, I'm Tay," started Taylor, but the girl interrupted him.

"Hey, aren't you Isaac Hanson?" she asked.

"Why, yes."

"Hi! I'm Sheila."

"Wait a minute," I said. "Do you have a brother named Scott?"

"Yea, why?"

"Hi, I'm Zellary Henninger. Brandon's older sister."

"Oh. Your brother is one sick little child."

"I know."

"Anyway, Ike, do you wanna dance?"

"Sure," he said and walked away with Sheila.

"Well, Ike sure looks happy," I said.

"I can't believe she turned me down," said Taylor.

"Oh, Taylor. It'll be okay," I said in a fake sympathetic voice.

"You know what would make it okay?" he said.

"What?"

"If you would dance with me. Just as friends."

"Well, okay."

"As long as we're switching partners, Jill, would you like to dance?" asked Zac.

"Sure!"

"Ronnie, are you and Marc going to dance?" I asked.

"No. Marc doesn't dance." she said with disgust for Marc.

"Hey, babe, I dance," said Marc.

"To one song. And they never play that song."

"Well, yea. But we could request "If You Can't Dance". It's our song."

"Marc, please just dance with me. It's easy."

"Okay. But your feet are going to hurt when I step on them."

"They've already lost all feeling from these shoes. Come on."

The six of us walked out to the dance floor. I put my hands around Taylor's neck, and he put his on my back. "All My Life" by K-Ci and JoJo came on.

"This song is so over-played," I said.

"Yea."

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Zac and Jill. "Look how happy Jill looks."

"Yea."

"It was nice of Zac to ask her to dance."

"Yea."

Then I saw Ronnie and Marc. Marc really wasn't that bad of a dancer. I told Taylor that.

"Yea."

"Taylor, you just said, 'Yea,' to my last four statements. What's on your mind?"

"Zel, why'd you say no when I asked you out?"

"One, because I was still in love with Zac. Two, because I value you as a friend, and I didn't wanna loose that."

"Really?"

"Yea. With Zac it's hard not to be friends. He just goofs off and you gotta laugh. But you, you're not like that. If we ever broke up, we'd be awkward around each other and the extent of our conversations would be, 'Yea.' And I like talking to you."

"I like talking to you too. I guess you're right."

"Aren't I always?"

We both laughed at that.

When the song ended we found each other and realized that there was a photographer set up that was taking pictures. We found Ike and Sheila and got in line. When it was our turn, we saw that there was a bench set up. Tay, Ronnie, Marc, Jill, Zac, and I sat on the bench, and Ike and Sheila stood behind us hugging each other. Jill was trying to sit as close to Zac as possible, and Marc was trying to decide which was his good side while Ronnie was rolling her eyes at him.

Somehow, that's how the picture got taken, and it looked hilarious. I will keep that picture as long as I live.
