Chapter 7

The next day at practice, we learned the dance. I thought it was pretty easy, and so did Ronnie, but most of the other girls couldn't get the hang of it.

After practice in the locker room, Jill explained her dance to Ronnie and I in detail. She had definately decided to do "MMMBop", and she had made up the whole dance already. She was bargging about how she was doing a toe touch and had a perfect landing. She didn't realize it, but she was doing Ronnie and I a favor by telling us what she was doing so we could make sure ours were harder.

That night I called Zac. I hadn't called him the night before because my parents took the family out to a "First Day in a New School" dinner. When I called, Ike answered.

"Hello."

"Hi, Ike. This is Zel."

"Hey, Zel. Do you want me to put Zac on, or did you call to talk to me?"

"Yea, Ike. I'm cheating on my boyfriend with his older brother, on the next "Oprah". Put Zac on."

"Okay, hold on one second, he's right here."

"Hey, Zel."

"Hi, Zac!"

"How's school?"

"The work's easy, but remember Jill from the mall?"

"Yea."

"She's in my homeroom. And she voluenteered us to share a locker," I said. Then I told Zac the whole Jill story, and finished with tonight at cheerleading.

"So, what are you going to do your dance to?"

"I don't know."

"What about something Spice Girls?"

""Never Give up on the Good Times" would probably be good. So would "Move Over"."

"Or "Naked"," he added.

"That's not cheerleading music!"

"But I'd like to see you dance to it."

"Zac, you hormone driven animal, stop that! I guess I'll use "Move Over". Thanks, Zac."

"Anytime. So, will you dance to "Naked" for me?"

"No! Bye, Zac."

"Later, Zel."

I got out my Spice Girls CD and started making up some moves. In an hour, I was just about done. I had managed to put in a backflip, a triple herkie, and a suicide jump for my finish. I knew that would impress the judges. Now all I would have to do is parctice.

The rest of the week went okay. Jill kinda avoided Ronnie, Marc, and I after Marc poured pepper in her milk on Wednesday. Before Ronnie and I knew it, Monday had come and it was time for us to try out. Ronnie had been on the squad last year, so she had an advantage. She had chosen to use "The Train". She showed me her dance on Sunday night, and it was good.

The try outs went in alphebetical order. I was am H, and Ronnie was a T, so we went into one of the practice rooms and each did our routine once. Then we went back to the bleachers, and soon it was Jill's turn. She was good, but not great. Then she did something that wasn't part of what she had told Ronnie and I on Tuesday. She did a back tuck and landed in a split. Everyone was impressed.

I was right after Jill. I walked onto the gym floor which was covered by a mat, and waited for the music for the group dance to begin. I went through that dance flawlessly, and then it was time for the cheer. My movements were good, but I had a sore throat and I think my vioce was wavering. Then it was time for my dance.

The music started to a few measures of futuristic sounds, and I did some stiff movements. Then as the music went on, I continued the dance with a scorpion, a series of famcy kicks, my triple herkie, and some toe spins. When it was time for my backflip, I added an extra twist to compete with Jill's. The it was time for my big finish. I added an extra toe touch, then hit the final toe touch and landed in a perfect split, which in the cheerleading world is known as a suicide jump.

After my turn, it was Tracy's. She wasn't as bad as everyone thought, but she was by no means good.

In about an half hour, it was Ronnie's turn. She did her routine, and it looked really good. "Ronnie will definately be the captain," I thought to myself.

After all the girls were done, Mrs. Lawrence and Miss Powers went into one of the practice rooms to decide who was on the squad. In about fifteen minutes they came out. They said some stuff about how we all did well, and then they announced the names of who made the squad. Among the names were the Oriental girl from homeroom who's name was Rachel, and Ronnie.

"I bet Jamie gets captain," I said to Ronnie.

"Maybe. She has been on the squad since 6th grade," said Ronnie.

"And you girls are probably wondering who the captain is," said Mrs. Lawrence. "Well, for the first time, this year we have co-captains. They tied with near perfect scores. This year's captains are: Zellary Henninger and Jill Elm!"

Oh brother.
