Chapter 11

The next day I woke up to a knocking on the door. "Wait, I'm coming!" I yelled as I struggled to get out of bed. When I finally got to the door, I found out that Erica was that was knocking.

"Hey, Nat," she said.

"Erica, do you know what time it is?"

"Yea. Do you?"

"Not really. What time is it?"

"Noon. You slept through breakfast. I was wondering if you've seen Nadine. She didn't come back to the room last night."

"I haven't seen her. She must still be at the hospital."

"This long?" asked Erica. "It's been like a day."

"She's with Josh. That says it all."

"You're right. When do you think someone will solve the crime?"

"You miss Chris, don't you?"

"Well, yea. I want someone it solve it before the masquerade ball tomorrow so I can be with him."

"I dunno. Me and Lance have a few ideas, but nothing definate."

There was a knock at the door.

"Who is it?" I called.

"Lance," said that deep voice that makes my heart melt.

"Come in!"

"Hey, babe. Missed you at breakfast."

"I slpet in, and I didn't hear Rose getting ready."

"You're the observant roomate. She moved in with Jack yesterday," said Lance.

"Oh. I might have to start setting an alarm."

"That's a good idea. Hey, Nat, I gotta talk to you."

"Okay. Spill."

"Erica, could you leave?" asked Lance.

"Nat, I didn't know you brought your laptop!" said Erica who hadn't been paying attention since Lance came in.

"Yea. I can't live without it," I said.

"Can I use it?"

"Well, Lance and I need to talk in private."

"We can go to the library," said Lance. "JC was the only one who ever went there, and now he's in the hospital, so we should have privacy there."

"Maybe we should visit him," I said,

"No. Besides, we can't. Nadine has your car."

"That's right. Well, later, Erica."

"Can I use the laptop?"

"Sure."

Lance and I left Erica with the laptop and started walking to the library.

"I think I know who the murderer is," said Lance.

"Who?"

"Joseph Khan. He's a director, so he'd be like really clever using things people said to determine who dies next, and I don't even think Joey is stupid enough to leave muddy footprints on the floor. And Sydney could not lose bracelets that easily."

"That seems logical. So, should we turn him in?"

"I don't know. I'm pretty sure he's the one."

We finally reached the library. I saw something on the floor. It was Joseph's body.

"There goes that theory."

~*~*~

It was really hot. Too hot. It seemed way too hot for Pennsylvania. I decided to go swimming.

When I got to the pool, I saw Allison in the lifeguard chair.

"Why do you get to be the lifeguard?" I asked her.

Allison turned and looked at me. "Oh, hi, Alyse. There's not much for the religious leader to do, so I'm a substitute for all the other employees," she answered.

"Do you have a lifeguard licence?" I asked.

"Well, no. But I can swim."

"Oh. Good enough," I said and dived in the deep end. I swam a lap and then got out and sat in one of the lounge chairs.

"Is the water cold?" said a voice from behind me. I turned to see who it was.

"Oh, hi, Justin," I said.

"You didn't answer the question. Is the water cold?"

"Yes, it's cold."

"Oh," he said. Before I could figure out what he was doing, he had lifted me in the air.

"What do you think you're doing?" I said.

"You said the water was cold, and you look so hot, so I figured you'd need to cool off," he said and threw me in the pool.

"Help! I don't know what to do! I know even less about lifeguarding than Pamala Anderson!" screamed Allison.

"Allie, I'm okay," I yelled while treading water. "Justin, you are such an idoit!"

"I'm an idoit?" he asked.

"Yes!" I said and started climbing out of the pool when Justin pushed me back in.

"You are a jerk!" I said. Then I finally successfully climbed out of the pool.

"You're right," said Justin.

"I am?" I asked.

"Yes. I'm a jerk. Let me make it up to you."

"How?"

"Dinner. Tonight. Le Mario's. My treat."

"Well, okay."

"Good. I'll come to your room to pick you up around 7:00."

"Sounds good."

"Later, babe," he said and left the pool area.

"Alyse and Justin. Sitting in a tree," sang Allie.

"Shut up!" I said.

"Okay, you don't have to snap at me," she said.

"Sorry," I said. "Hey, Allie?"

"Yea?"

"What should I wear?"
