Chapter 15

I had been caught. I had no idea what to do. If I stayed put I wouldn't make any noise, but the killer could easily find me by feeling around. If I ran he'd definately hear me, but I've been running track since 8th grade, so I could more than likely out run him. I decided to try making a run for it.

I darted down the hall of the passage as fast as I could. It tool a few seconds, but then I heard the killer's footsteps following me. He was faster than I'd expected, and that made me nervous. I started running even faster.

The passage seemed endless. Soon I came to some stepr. It was so dark that I didn't see them, and I tripped. I fell on my face. Quickly, I got up and felt my chin. There was blood. Lots of it. I could tell that I had cut myself pretty badly, but I didn't let that stop me. The killer was getting close. Too close.

I ran up the stairs, taking them two at a time. When I got to the top, there was only a small alcove. I crawled in and was in a small square of a room. I felt the walls, pawing in the darkness for some kind of door. I could hear the killer on the stairs. A few more seconds and he would be able to catch me. Finally, a door opened. At this point I didn't care where I was as long as I was out of that passage and away from the killer.

I slipped through the door and closed it. The killer was still trying unsuccessfully to fit through the narrow passage to the alcove.

"Nat, what are you doing here?"

I realized that I didn't yet know where I was and turned around to see who was talking.

"Lance! Help me!" I said and started moving a couch against the door, whick I could see was extremely well camoflauged with the wall. Lance knew the tone of my voice ment trouble and helped me lift the heavy couch. Once it was securily against the door, we went to the other side of the room and sat on the bed.

"Now, what happened?" Lance asked.

"I know who the killer is!"

"How?"

"Nate, the chef, he..."

"So Nate's the killer?" asked Lance.

"No!"

"Then who is?"

"Listen! Nate came to me and said he needed to talk to me. He took me to the kitchen and then into the freezer and through a secret panel in the back of the freezer into a secret passage. He said that he knew who the killer was and that I was the next to die, but it was gonna be for real this time. Then someone came from behind and choked Nate to death. He said something and I recognized his voice. Then he started singing about Sydney as though he was in love with her. I crept against a wall and tried to be quiet because he didn't know I was there and if he found out that I was there he'd kill me.

"I wasn't in luck. After a few minutes he was like, 'Who's there?' so I ran down the hall. Then I came to stairs and tripped because it was like dark and all and I got this cut on my chin which I'm not worried about right now even though I know it must be pretty bad because there was a lot of blood. I hurried up and got up because he was like really close by now, and I ran up the stairs. At the top there was a thin alcove which lead to a small room and that's when I got in here. I left the killer trying to get into the alcove."

"Wow. What are you going to do about the killer?" he asked.

"I have a plan."

I was in the living room reading a book. It was late, but not too late. Then there was a knock on the front door, which was really weird. I thought for a moment and concluded that it might be Nadine returning from her long extended visit to the hospital, so I decided to answer the door.

"Nadine, why have you..." I started and then stopped because I realized that this definately wasn't Nadine. Before me stood a strange looking man with a package in his hand.

"Who are you?" I asked.

"Bob. Who are you?" he asked.

"My name's Erica."

"I have a bloody package," he said. He had an English accent mixed woth what sounded like Italian, Australian, and Chinese.

"Who's it for?"

"I can't read English. What's this say?" he asked and pointed to the name on the box. It was Natalie's.

"Oh. I'll sign for it."

"Okay," he said and held out a pen. As I signed, I noticed that it was raining outside.

"There you go," I said.

"Thank you. Now I'll go back out in the bloody rain," he said. If he was trying to put me on a guilt trip, it was working.

"It's really raining hard out there. Why don't you spend the night in here on the couch?" I asked.

"Bloody thank you ma'am."

"There's some pillows and blankets in the corner," I said. "Make yourself comfortable, but be sure to be out early tomorrow because we're not supposed to have overnight guests."

"Thank you."

"Well, good night."

"Good morning," said Bob.

I took Natalie's package and went to my room. The package was taunting me. I was extremely curious what was in it and who it was from. Nat was one of my best friends, she wouldn't really mind if I opened it.

So I did.

Bob was right. This was a bloody package.

"Alyse, are you gonna give me an answer anytime soon?" asked Justin.

"Well, yes."
