Chapter 6

"I lost some time with over thinking. We're all bent out of shape. Being pulled in two directions, don't know how much I can take. Got my mind on my business, but my feat are on the ground. Do you still want me? Do you still want me around? Can we get together again?"~Backstreet BoyZZZZZZ (remember the MTV parody?), "Can We Get Together Again?"

Lance and Natalie got back to the house in a few mintes, but to Lance it seemed more like days. He couldn't believe he had said any of what he just did to Natalie. He had hoped that maybe at least they could be friends again after all these years, but now he had just blown any chance of that happening.

When they got to the stable, Natalie quickly unsaddled her horse and ran inside the house. Lance took his time with his horse. He needed the time to be alone to sort out his thoughts about what had just happened before he could go back into the house and be with his guests. He must have been out there for a while, because soon Nadine came out to see what was taking him so long.

"Hey, Lance!" she said as she walked into the stable. "I saw Nat come in like 20 minutes ago, and I didn't know where you were. What's wrong?"

"Oh everything!" said Lance.

"What happened?"

"I just made a fool out of myself in front of her!" Lance said and told Nadine the whole story. She listened patiently, and by the time he was done with the story, he had burst into tears.

"Lance, it's okay," she said hugging him.

"No it's not," he said. "I just wanted so badly to make a good inpression."

"I'm sure she isn't taking it that badly."

"I dunno, Nad, you should have seen the way she just ran out of here."

"I know, from what you said it sounded pretty bad," said Nadine. "But you know what? Six years ago you and Natalie were awesone together. Yeah, you guys were going out, but you guys still had a great chemistry on way more levels than just romantic. You guys were great friends, and I bet that you still could be."

"But she's changed so much Nad. She's become such a, a..." stammered Lance not being able to bring himself to say the word.

"A rich snob?" guessed Nadine.

"Yeah. I mean, she's still awesome and all, but she's so different."

"I know. It's gonna be hard," said Nadine, "but just because something's hard doesn't mean that you can runaway from it. You have to give it a shot, or you'll never know what could become of it."

"You're right, Nadine," said Lance. "How do you know all this stuff?"

"Just life," said Nadine.

"So," said Lance breathing a sigh. "What should I do?"

"Well, I think I saw her go into her room," said Nadine. "I think you should go in there and talk to her. Tell her how you feel. She'll probably listen to you and you guys will make up. And if not, the worst that can happen is that you'll know that it wasn't meant to be."

"Okay," said Lance getting up to go in the house. After a few steps he noticed that Nadine wasn't following him. "Are you coming in?"

"Nah, I think I'm gonna stay out here for awhile. I kinda like it," she said.

"Why?" Lance asked. "Six years ago you wouldn't go near a horse."

"It's not the horses," said Nadine. "It's just sorta peaceful. Either that or I just like the smell of horse poo."

Lance laughed. "Whatever. See you later, and thanks!"

"No problem, anytime!"

Lance walked back to the house and went in the back door. After closing it behind himself, he walked down the hall to Natalie and Scott's room. When he got there, he knocked on the door.

After a few seconds, Natalie softly mumbled, "Come in."

Lance slowly opened the door. He saw Natalie sitting in the corner crying.

"Natalie, what's wrong?" he said.

"He's dead," she said.

"Huh?" said Lance not believeing what he was hearing.

"He's dead," she said again pointing to the bed on the other side of the room. Lance looked and couldn't believe what he saw: Scott laying lifeless on the bed with a knife burried deep into his chest.
