Chapter 1
January 1999...
"So you'll come to the show?" Pierre Bouvier asked his girlfriend of a year and a half,
Trinity Chase, over the phone.
"Of course! I wouldn't miss it for the world," Trinity cooed into the phone. "When have I
ever turned down an opportunity to see my boyfriend perform?"
"I know, you never have," Pierre said. "It's just that this will be my first concert with
the new band since I left Reset and I really need the support."
"The tape you guys made the other day sounded great."
"Thanks, but that was after several tries. Simple Plan has only been fully together for two
weeks. No one in their right mind would already be playing a show at this point."
"But as we all know, you aren't in your right mind."
"Exactly," Pierre said laughing. "You're too cute."
"I know," Trinity joked.
"Well, I gotta run," Pierre said. "Band practice. And it's the last one before tomorrow's
show. I can't wait for you to meet the other guys on Saturday."
"I can't wait to meet them either!" Trinity said.
"So what are you doing tonight?"
"Going out with a few of the girls."
"To where?"
"Pierre, let's not get into this again."
"I think we need to. Where are you going?"
"The Back Cellar."
"Dammit, Trinity, why do you need to be going there?"
"The location doesn't matter, Pierre! You'd be upset no matter what bar I went to!"
"I mean in general, why do you need to go to bars and clubs and stuff?"
"To be with my friends, drink, have fun..."
"No, you're going to meet guys."
"Pierre! I love you! I'm not going there to meet guys!"
"Whatever."
"Pierre, why don't you trust me?"
"You're a pretty girl, you could easily find some random guy and hook up with him. And as
long as I wasn't there to witness it, I'd never find out. And you have to admit, you do
flirt with a lot of guys."
"You know you're the only one I want, and what you mistake as flirting is just me
being friendly to people. I don't know why I put up with this..."
"No, baby, please don't say that," Pierre begged. He was constantly afraid of losing
Trinity, and he couldn't stand it when she seemed angry.
"I wouldn't have to if you actually trusted me to go out with my friends once in
awhile."
"You're right, you're right," Pierre said. "I'm sorry." He looked at his watch. "Shit,
I'm late. Bye, baby."
"Bye, Pierre," Trinity said as they hung up the phone. Pierre bolted out of his house and
quickly drove to Chuck Comeau's house where the band practiced in the basement.
"Howdy, stranger," Chuck greeted him from behind the drumset. "Thank God you're here.
These songs just aren't the same without the vocals."
"Very funny," Pierre said taking his place behind the center microphone. "I was arguing
with Trinity and lost track of time."
"When aren't you guys arguing?" Jeff Stinco, the lead guitarist asked.
Pierre shot him a look. "Whatever, let's just get started." Chuck cued them by clicking
his drumsticks, and the five of them launched into one of their favorite and best songs,
"Just a Kid." They proceeded to run through the entire set list, and they then took a short
dinner break.
"Tacos or pizza?" Sebastien Lefebvre, Simple Plan's guitarist and back up vocalist asked.
"What should we order?"
"I'm so sick of pizza, order up some tacos," David, the bassist and back up vocalist
answered.
"Is that cool with everyone?" Seb asked. The guys nodded in agreement, and Seb reached for
the phone to place an order.
"So what were you and Trinity fighting about tonight?" Chuck asked Pierre.
"Oh, just stupid stuff. It's nothing," Pierre answered. He had been so wrapped up in the
music that he had almost forgotten about his fight with Trinity, but now that Chuck had
mentioned it he was beginning to get angry again.
"I know it's not nothing," Chuck said. "I know we haven't been as close as we use to be
since we haven't seen each other in forever, but I can tell when something's wrong. And you
seemed pretty pissed when you came in here."
Right before he had started going out with Trinity, Pierre and Chuck had been in a band
together called Reset. The band had been together for a few years when Chuck quit to go
back to school, but Pierre had continued with it until abouit a month ago when Chuck had
called him asking if he would join Simple Plan with him, Jeff, and Sebastien who had all
gone to the same high school. Pierre agreed, and soon after David joined rounding out the
lineup. Pierre and Chuck had been best friends before they lost touch, and though they were
just getting used to each other all over again, it looked like their friendship was
returning.
But because they had only been reunited for a short time, none of the boys in the band had
met Trinity yet, so none of them could have understood what Pierre thought was a problem
with her, or made a judgment as to whether there was indeed a problem...
"Yeah, I guess I was pretty pissed," Pierre shared with Chuck. "Trinity was going to this
bar with some of her friends and I always get jealous and worried that she's going to hook
up with some guy."
"You just gotta trust her man," Chuck said. "Until you actually see her doing something
shady. Then you can get pissed at her."
Pierre laughed. "You're probably right," he said. "It just always seems like she's
flirting."
"It's just natural for some girls," Chuck said. "They just think they're being friendly,
and they really don't mean anything by it, but it drives boyfriends crazy!"
"That's exactly what she said! She said that she was 'just being friendly.' I guess it
maybe is just a girl thing."
"It sure is," said Chuck. "C'mon, let's go eat some tacos."
"Yeah, tacos almost make you feel like you're not stuck in Canada," Pierre joked as he
followed Chuck upstairs.

"Good practice everyone," Jeff said as he packed up his guitar.
"Yeah, we're gonna kick ass at The Joint tomorrow!" Sebastien said.
"Hell yeah!" David agreed. "Well, I'm off. I gotta go to Julie's house."
"Sorta late to pick her up for a date, isn't it?" Chuck asked. It was already after
midnight.
"Who said anything about going out?" David asked rethorically with a sly grin. "Bye,
guys."
"See ya, Dave," Sebastien said as David left. "I'm off too. Later guys."
"Yeah, bye everyone," Jeff said as he and Seb started up the stairs.
Hearing Dave talk about his girlfriend again reminded Pierre of Trinity, and he wondered
what she was doing. "Hey, Chuck, you up for a little pre-gig celebration?" Pierre asked
mischeviously.
"Why does this not sound good..."
"There's nothing shady, just a few drinks with my old buddy at The Back Cellar."
"That wouldn't happen to be the bar that Trinity went to, would it?" Chuck asked.
"You know me too well, don't you?"
"I suppose so. What do you plan on doing, spying on her?"
"No, never, I just wanna go out on the night before my first concert with my new band and
celebrate with my best friend and my girlfriend," Pierre said. "Okay, yeah, I wanna see
what she's up to."
"Well, okay," Chuck said, thinking that maybe his presence would help Pierre to cool off and
be more rational. "But you can't let her know what you're doing."
"Of course not," Pierre said. "Let's go." He grabbed his coat and started up the stairs
before Chuck had a chance to change his mind. Soon the two of them were in Pierre's car on
their way to the bar. When they arrived, they showed the bouncer their ID's and paid the
cover charge. Pierre immediately started looking for Trinity as they entered the
bar.
"Do you think we're better than these guys?" Chuck asked. There was a band playing in the
corner, and the whole room was crowded with people jumping and dancing to the beat.
"Yeah, of course," Pierre answered quickly, not taking much time to listen to the music.
His eyes were quickly and rapidly scanning the room in hopes of spotting Trinity. Finally,
he saw her at the bar with her friend Trish, talking to an attractive guy that he had never
seen before. Trinity suddenly threw her head back laughing, which set off Pierre's
jealousy.
"Hey, check out that chick at the bar!" Chuck said unknowingly, pointing to Trinity.
Pierre flashed him a look. "Watch it."
Chuck was confused by Pierre's sudden attitude, but then realized the situation. "You mean
that's...?"
"Yeah," Pierre said quickly cutting him off. He then started walking quickly towards the
bar.
"Pierre, wait, don't do this!" Chuck called, trying to catch up with him. But Pierre was
too far gone to listen. Within seconds he reached the bar and stood behind Trinity, who had
his back to him.
"Hello Trinity," Pierre said loudly causing her to turn around on her bar stool,
startled.
"Oh, hi, Pierre!" she said. "What are you doing here?"
"Me and my buddy Chuck came out for a little celebration," he said putting his arm around
Chuck who smiled nervously. "What I should ask is what are you doing here?"
"I told you, I was going out with some friends," said said clenching her teeth. "You've met
Trish." Trinity motioned to the girl sitting next to her.
"I guess what I meant was what are you doing here. Like sitting here talking to this
guy."
"Pierre, James is just a friend. We went to the same high school and ran into each other
unexpectedly. We're catching up on each other's lives, nothing else. James is studying to
be a doctor."
"How nice," Pierre said. "Trinity, we need to have a talk."
"Okay, shoot."
"Not here, in private. Come with me."
"Pierre, I haven't done anything wrong. You can talk to me right here because we have
nothing to talk about."
"Like hell we don't!" Pierre yelled, causing several people to turn and stare. "You
actually expect me to believe that while sitting here talking to Mr. Beautiful Future
Doctor, you're just catching up with an old friend? That's bullshit, Trinity!"
Trinity stared at him for several seconds in silence. "I don't need to take this. C'mon,
James, let's dance," Trinity said taking his arm and dragging him onto the dance floor.
Trish glanced at Pierre and then walked off in another direction.
Pierre panicked. He was again afraid of losing Trinity, and he had to do something, fast.
"Trinity, wait!" he yelled. "I'll never be jealous again!"
"Maybe I'll give you cause someday," she called back, and continued to submerge further into
the crowd.
Sighing, Pierre turned to Chuck with a hurt expression on his face. "I screwed up, didn't
I?"
"Yup, you did," Chuck answered.
"Dammit!" Pierre swore pounding his fist on the bar and then slumping down onto the stool
that Trinity had been occupying not a minute before. "I need a drink."
