Halloween Customs in the United States

When English, Irish and Scottish immigrants first came to North America with the purpose of settling the land in the 1600's, they brought with them many customs; among them, their Halloween customs. However, since they had to mingle with other settlers, some of which had strict religious beliefs, the customs of Halloween brought to the North American continent by the English, Irish, and Scottish, did not become popular until the 1800's. In the 1800's, with the major influx of English, Irish, and Scottish immigrants to North America, Halloween customs became more popular. The Halloween custom for children to go door-to-door to do a "trick-or-treat" developed in the 1900's in the United States. However, the popularity of doing a trick-or-treat was mainly confined to smaller towns and villages, where people mostly knew each other, and so it was much safer to do trick-or-treating. As cities grew in the United States in the early to mid-1900's, people knew less and less about their next-door neighbors, and so trick-or-treating became less popular in big cities. To counter this trend, Halloween became a large community celebration, and family parties were held, both which gained in popularity. Other Halloween customs in North America which developed and are still popular to this day include community-sponsored bonfires, Halloween dances, Halloween costume parties, Halloween costume parades, and Halloween skits, to name but a few forms of entertainment that are held on the evening of Halloween. In the 21st century, with the development of the World Wide Web of the internet, sending Halloween ecards via e-mail as well as recording Halloween events and posting these Halloween events on audio and video websites have also become popular.
