What Are The Scriptural Readings For Rosh Hashanah ?
Rosh Hashanah readings from the Hebrew Bible or Tanakh in the synagogue services are as follows:
Rosh Hashanah Readings - Day 1:
- Torah Reading: Genesis 21 (specifically, Genesis 21:1-34)
- Haftorah Reading (or Haftarah Reading): 1 Samuel 1:1 - 2:10
- Maftir: Numbers 29:1-6 (Maftir is essentially a supplemental reading)
Rosh Hashanah Readings - Day 2:
- Torah Reading: Genesis 22
- Haftorah Reading (or Haftarah Reading): Jeremiah 31:2-20
- Maftir: Numbers 29:1-6 (Maftir is essentially a supplemental reading)
What is the Maftir? The Maftir is the last section of the Torah reading in the synagogue on each Sabbath. The Maftir is read on Shabbat ("Sabbath" in Hebrew) morning in synagogue from a Sefer Torah scroll. "Maftir" means "one who concludes" in Hebrew. "Sefer Torah" means "the Scroll of Torah" in Hebrew.
What is the Haftorah or Haftarah? The Haftorah or Haftarah is text that is selected from the books of Nevi'im ("The Prophets" in Hebrew). This text is read publicly in the synagogue after the reading of the Torah on each Sabbath, as well as on Jewish festivals and fast days. The Haftarah usually has a thematic link to the Torah reading that precedes it.
