Simchat Torah.

Simchat Torah has many transliterations from Hebrew. Some Jewish people refer to Simchat Torah as Simchas Torah rather than Simchat Torah. Other Jewish people will transliterate the words either as Simhat Torah, or Simchat Tora, or Simhat Tora.

What does Simchat Torah mean?

The word "Simchat" derives from the Hebrew word "Simcha" which means either joy or gladness. In turn, the word Simcha derives from the root Hebrew word "Sameyach" or "Sameach", which means happy or glad. As a Hebrew and Yiddish noun, the word Simcha means a festive occasion. Therefore, Jewish people will associate the word Simcha with a happy or joyous occasion and will use the the word Simcha to refer to a happy or joyous occasion.

The word Torah, in a general sense, means "law", since the Torah itself uses the word Torah to refer to a specific body of statutes, but it can also mean either "teaching", "instruction", or "scribe" in Hebrew. Therefore, using the word "Law" as the general meaning here, "Simchat Torah" means "Joy (or Gladness) of (or in) the Law (I.E. Torah)" in Hebrew.

Simchat Torah has also been interpreted as meaning either: (1) Rejoicing in the Torah, (2) The Rejoicing of the Torah, (3) Rejoicing in Torah, and (4) Rejoicing with the Torah.
