The Day of Thanksgiving Day in the United States and Canada
Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on different days in the United States and Canada. In the United States, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1939 proclaimed Thanksgiving Day to be on the fourth Thursday in November, moving the date back a week earlier from its previous place on the final Thursday in November. He did this to help businesses by lengthening and therefore encouraging more holiday shopping before Christmas. In 1941, Congress adopted a joint resolution which established Thanksgiving Day as being on the fourth Thursday in November. In Canada, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October based on the January 31, 1957 announcement by the Canadian Parliament that the second Monday in October would be "a day of general thanksgiving to the almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed". Prior to this announcement, Thanksgiving Day in Canada was celebrated on November 6th. However, after World War I and World War II, Remembrance Day (Veterans Day in the United States) was established on November 11th and since Thanksgiving Day on November 6th kept falling in the same week as Remembrance Day, the date for Thanksgiving Day was moved as a result in 1957.
