Yom Kippur is the most solemn day as well as the holiest day of the Jewish year. Yom Kippur is also known as the "Day of Atonement" as in the day in which one atones for one's sins committed between oneself and G-d during the past year, but not between oneself and other individuals that were committed during the past year, since it is the Jewish belief that only forgiveness from the individual who was transgressed by another individual can truly atone for the sin or sins committed by the latter on the former.
Yom Kippur has the distinction of being the only day mentioned in the Hebrew Bible where one must fast for an entire day. However, since a day was later defined by most - but not all - Sages as beginning either before sunset (the amount of minutes before sunset has varied between Sages who follow this belief; most say at least 18 minutes before sunset) and concluding at nightfall, the lack of uniformity over the exact definition of a day among Sages resulted in different starting points of the Jewish day as well as different ending points of the Jewish day (either sunset or nightfall, depending on the opinion).
Although Yom Kippur is associated with solemnity, it is not a sad day. We approach this day with the hope and expectation that once we have atoned for our sin or sins committed against G-d during the past year, we will experience joy in the knowledge that G-d has forgiven us.
