This Rose

This once beautiful rose was given to me
With what I assumed was your love undying
But I know now with no doubt in my mind
I was facing a world filled with crying.

The scent of this rose stayed within me
Would follow me each place I'd go
How could this rose be so beautiful
Yet fill my whole world with woe?

I should have looked at this rose more carefully
Seen the thorns that stuck out of each side
Each one was symbolic of a thrust in my heart
I couldn't keep you tho god knows I tried.

This once beautiful rose was as red as could be
Now turned blacker than a cold starless night
How could something that once held such beauty
Become such a horrible sight?
