Spell Points
THE RULES
My Spell Point system is a little different from those in the Player's Option: Spells and Magic book but the theme of rules is still the same.
Apart from obeying the Max. Spell Level, the spellcaster may cast any spell that he has learned so long as he has the Spell Points to do so.
I've kept the ratio of Spell Points short between high and low level spells in order to keep the system balanced. (1) 9th level spell [10 SP] = (5) 1st level spells [2 SP each]. It is also very easy to use in play with each spell using it's Spell Level +1 in Spell Points.
COMMENTS
Overall, you'll find that your spellcaster might be able to cast a couple more spells at low levels over the core 3e variety once you factor in Intelligence bonuses, but certainly less than the equivalent core 3e class at high levels. I've found that attrition is particularly high at low levels so I've deliberately given them a small break if they have a high enough requisite stat. On the flipside, at higher levels where their flexibility really begins to shine I have subtly curbed their advancement to where I wanted it to be.
You'll also note that my stat bonus chart will not mirror that of 3e's. It does however do exactly what I want it to do. Give a slightly better bonus at lower levels and slightly less at higher levels. A typical Wizard approaching 20th level will typically have an Intelligence in the mid-20's, and possibly even higher. I've taken this into consideration...
Naturally, with a Spell Point system, the Sorcerer class becomes somewhat redundant. Note that IMC - they just don't exist. And obviously a Cleric's ability to convert his spells into healing becomes superfluous. ;)
Although the Spell Points were designed as a set of stand-alone rules, they're also designed to work well with the new Path Magic and Combat mechanics.
Right now I've only done the Wizard, Cleric and Druid but the rest of the spell-casters well get converted over soon.
