The Novus Ordo Mass in English and Latin

The Tridentine Mass
Side-by-side comparison of the two missals
Improved translation

This composition is the official rite of the Patriarchate of Rome since 1969. It is an artificial composition concocted by a Consilium of intellectuals, headed by Archbishop Annibile Bugnini (1912-1982) known for his progressive views. It is known that this rite was virtually formulated as early as 1948, and inspired by usages found at Taizé and other Protestant communities. It is usually used with Eucharistic Prayer n° II, reproduced below. It contains a few fragments of the prayer of Hippolytus. There are three other anaphoras. The first is nearly the ancient Roman Canon but with the Institution formula as below. The others are new compositions. The third is loosely based on a Gallican formulary, and the fourth is quite oriental in its structure. — Fr Anthony Chadwick

P: Father, it is our duty and our P: Vere dignum et iustum est,
salvation, always and everywhere aequum et salutàre, nos tibi,
to give you thanks sancte Pater,
through your beloved Son, semper et ubìque gràtias àgere
Jesus Christ. per Filium dilectiònis tuae
                                              Jesum Christum.

He is the Word through whom Verbum tuum,
you made the universe, per quod cuncta fecìsti:
the Savior you sent to redeem us. quem misìsti nobis
By the power of the Holy Spirit, Salvatòrem et Redemptòrem,
he took flesh and was born incarnàtum de Spìritu Sancto
of the Virgin Mary. et ex Virgine natum.

For our sake he opened up his arms Qui voluntàtem tuam adìmplens
on the cross; et pòpulum tibi sanctum acquirens
he put an end to death extèndit manus cum paterètur,
and revealed the resurrection. ut mortem sòlveret
In this he fulfilled your will et resurrectiònem manifestàret.
and won for you a holy people.

And so we join the angels Et ìdeo cum Angelis
