"Beth, you have been my only girlfriend. During my whole life, you are the only one that I have ever kissed. I want to go back to dating," Kevin stated.
Beth did not say anything. Kevin began to get worried. What had he done?
"Beth, are you okay?"
"I don't know, I just don't know."
"How can I help?"
"I don't think you can."
"I just screwed up the best friendship I have ever had, didn't I?"
"I wouldn't say that."
"Please explain it to me."
"It's just that I liked the kiss-"
"So did I!"
"But I want you as my best friend. That's how I think of you. To me you're my best friend, not my boyfriend."
"I love you."
"I love you, too."
"No, I mean, I really love you, like a husband would."
"What the....? When did marriage come into this?"
"Nevermind. I love you like I want to marry you."
"Kev, slow down. You're going way too fast. What brought you to this?"
"Well, I missed you so much, and I'm getting old and you've been my only girlfriend."
"Then go out with someone else!"
"Beth, I love you."
"Aw, honey, I love you so much, Kev, but it's not like that. You're scaring me. No not scaring....intimidating me. And I don't like it. Can we please just go to your house?"
"Fine."
He restarted the engine and pulled back on to the road. As he drove he just kept thinking, Kev, you really screwed up this time.
As Kevin kept thinking that, all Beth could think was, I just ruined the best thing I've had big time.
When they finally pulled up to his house, Kevin quickly got out to get her suitcases out of the trunk. Beth grabbed her purse and ran back to Kevin. She threw her arms around him and Kevin cautiously returned the hug. She snuggled into his arms and said, "Kev, I never want to lose you. Never. I just realized you are all I have left. A.J. hates me because I didn't want to live with him. I don't really know the other guys. I won't talk to my parents, and all I have is you and my job. And I probably just lost you. All I have is my job."
Before Kevin could respond, Beth's cell phone rang. She pulled it out of her purse and answered it.
"Beth, this is your boss."
"Hi, Mr. Williams."
"Hello. I'm sorry to tell you this, especially because your on vacation, but I think you just lost you job."
"What?!"
"The court thing, it didn't go to well. We lost our case, and we can't exactly run a business and pay employees when we're bankrupt."
"Okay, I see."
"Well, I'll let you go, but let me just say that you are great at what you do."
"Thank you."
"Bye."
"Bye."
She hung up the phone and turned to Kevin. With her eyes brimmed with tears she said, "Now I have nothing."
