Chapter Twenty Eight

I heard footsteps in the hallway and I looked toward the door. Justin appeared and gave me an icy stare, "Supper is ready." With that, he turned around and walked away.

Chris looked over at me and said, "It takes him awhile to get used to people."

"Yeah. Well, he better be or I might just slip some info to Maricar," I said.

Chris's face fell, "You can't!"

"Your right, I won't, but he better be nicer to me. I should be the one being an asshole," I said standing up.

"No offence, but its really between Michelle and Justin, not us," Chris said, also standing up.

"What! It should matter to me, I know what it feels like, and you probably don't. You don't know what it feels like to have your fiancé sleep with your best friend, you really don't," I said angrily.

"Your right, but it's still between them, we couldn't have stopped them," he said.

"No, your right, I'm sorry I yelled at you," I said. "Your forgiven," he said and kissed me on my lips.

He gently caressed my cheek and pulled me into a hug. I ran my hands up and down his back and kissed him. He pushed me up against the desk and began to kiss my neck. I giggled slightly as he bit me. I ran my hands under his shirt and down to his pants. I put my index fingers in the loops and pulled him even closer to me. He moaned in response and picked me up a little so I was sitting on the desk. He moved between my legs and ran his hands along my inner thighs.

"Ahem," someone said loudly. We looked over in surprise. "Supper is ready," Justin said coldly, "but I can see your skipping to desert."

"Justin, shut the hell up," Chris said and backed away from me. I jumped off the desk and straightened my shirt. Chris walked out of the room and when I proceeded to do so, Justin blocked my way.

"So, how long has this been going on?" he asked rudely.

"Look asshole, Chris doesn't sleep around, unlike you," I said and tried to push past him.

He grabbed my arm and said, "Dani is like a sister to me. You better not have done anything with him," he said and released my arm from his grasp. I pushed past him and turned to face him when I was in the hall.

"What gives you the right to cheat on your girlfriend with my sister? My sister didn't even know," I said and walked down the hall. Justin followed close behind me until we reached the dining room.

I sat down next to Chris with Justin across from me. He shot me a dirty look and I looked over at Chris. He was either unaware of the look or chose to ignore it. He was looking out the big bay window behind Justin and Maricar. I looked up as Doris and Art walked into the room. When they sat down, we said our prayers and began to eat.

After I helped clear the table and wash the dishes, Chris and I sat out on the back porch like we used to. We sat on a bench and looked out at the dark sky filled with stars. I looked over at him. The porch light illuminated his face. He appeared to be in deep thought. "What are you thinking?" I asked.

"Oh, nothing," he said and looked at me.

"Oh, come on. Tell me," I said.

"I was just thinking of how beautiful you are," he said.

"No you weren't, you weren't even looking at me before," I said.

"Okay, I wasn't then, but now I am," he said and kissed me on my cheek.

"Really?" I asked.

"Yeah," he said softly. He then took my hands in his and kissed me on the lips. This is the first real kiss I've felt in a long time. You just know that it was meant to be. He stood up abruptly and pulled me with him. "Follow me," he said. We walked hand in hand off the porch and soon we reached a big, oak tree. I smiled when I realized what he was up to. On the tree, there were initials carved, CK + JS. I looked over at him and kissed him on the cheek. He wrapped his arms around me and we began to sway to unheard music. We stayed like that for awhile until Maricar walked out onto the porch.

"Chris, Justin wants to talk to you. He's upstairs," she said and then walked back in.

"I should go and see what he wants," Chris said and walked into the house, leaving me standing there by myself.

I looked at the tree and ran my hand across the initials. I remember when he cut those into the wood. It was a hot, summer day and we were playing Frisbee. He stopped playing and pulled the knife out of his pocket. He wouldn't let me see what he was doing, but when he did, boy was I surprised. I walked past the oak tree, to the end of the property. At the end was an old dirt road. I looked down and could see my old back yard. I walked down the road, to my old house and stood in the back yard, just looking at it. Obviously someone lived there, but it still looked the same with the exception of the toys scattered all around it. It was still the same color, size, still had the same windows and flowers, etc. I looked up at my old bedroom window. The blinds were down, but I could tell a light was on. I smiled to myself and walked back to Art and Doris's house.

When I walked in the back door, it was pitch dark. I blindly found my way upstairs and walked to the room that I was sharing with Chris. There were two beds and he was already in his. I pulled a tee shirt and boxer shorts from my bag and changed in the bathroom. I walked back to the room and lay down on the bed. Sleep soon took me over.

I woke up the next morning as the sunlight hit me. I sat up slowly in bed and looked around. It was nine in the morning and Chris wasn't in his bed. I pulled my hair back into a low ponytail and got out of bed. I walked out into the hall and went downstairs. When I walked into the dining room, Justin stopped talking and looked at me.

"Good morning, Jen," he said. I think that you could tell by my expression that I was shocked.

"Hello," I said and sat down. They then resumed their conversation that they were having.

Around noon Maricar came downstairs, dressed and ready to go. "Hey Jen," she said, "do you wanna go shopping?"

"Sure, just let me get dressed," I said and walked upstairs. Fifteen minutes later I was ready to go. We got into my car and drove to the mall. We were shopping in National Record Mart when Maricar said, "Oh god, look at that girl." I looked over and saw a woman that was wearing a tube top and tiny shorts that were too small for her body because she was a little over weight.

"Oh my," I said and started to look at a compilation CD.

"Jen!" someone said excitedly. I looked up and that woman was standing in front of me.

"Hi," I said.

"Do you remember me?" she asked.

"No, I'm sorry, I don't," I said.

"It's Alex!" she said.

"Oh, hi," I said as I remembered who she was.

"Mommy!" screamed a little girl.

"Hush," Alex said. The little girl was about 5. She was standing next to a boy who looked like he was 10. "So, how are you? I haven't seen you since you left school," she said.

"I was in the hospital," I said.

"Oh," she said, "are you here to see Chris? I still can't believe I know him. He's like, so famous!"

"It was nice seeing you again Alex, but I have to go, bye," I said and dragged Maricar out of the store.

"Who was that?" Maricar asked.

"Miss Popularity," I said, "who could have cared less if I died and probably doesn't even remember Chris."

"Wow, harsh," she said.

"I'm kinda hungry, do you wanna get something to eat?" I asked.

"Sure," she said. We walked to the food court and got some lunch. By the time we were done eating and threw our trash away, some guy came up to us.

"Jen, you never called me," he said.

I stopped suddenly and closed my eyes. "Why would I do that?" I asked as he snaked his arm around me.

"Because you want a real man," he said.

"I know I want a real man, but why would I call you?" I asked.

He ignored me and asked, "Who's your friend?"

"None of your business," I said.

"Oh, you’re from that group, huh?" he said.

"Yeah," Maricar said.

"I could probably take you both," he said.

"We're both taken," she said.

"But that doesn't matter, right Jen?" he said.

"Leave me the hell alone," I said and took off for the parking lot. When I reached the car, I was crying hysterically.

"Jen, are you okay?" Maricar asked.

"No," I said and tried to breathe.

"Deep breathes," she said.

"It's not fair," I managed to say.

"What? What's not fair," she asked.

"Why god? Why do you have to torment me?" I asked," I never did anything wrong to deserve this."

"What happened?" she asked.

"He raped me," I said and sank to the ground.

"He what? That jerk," she said and bent down beside me, "does anyone else know?"

"No," I said, "it's something I want to forget, but he keeps on popping up everywhere."

"Aww...You poor thing," she said and hugged me, "lets get out of here."

"Okay," I said and got into the car.
