Chapter Thirty One

It’s been a week since the visit at the hospital and my dad is fine. He got released yesterday and is to rest and take more medication. I’ve been keeping myself preoccupied with work and visiting my father. I’m going to visit him now. I bought him a card and flowers.

When I pulled my car into the driveway, I noticed there were a lot of people here. My mom must be having a welcome home party. I turned off my car and grabbed the bag with the flowers and card and walked into the house. “Honey,” my mom called to me when I walked in, “come over here.”

I walked over to her and said, “Where’s Daddy?”

“He’s upstairs Jennifer,” she said.

“Is it okay if I go and see him?” I asked.

“I guess,” she said and turned away.

I slowly walked up the stairs, looking at the pictures on the wall. I finally made it upstairs and looked into the first room. My daddy was in there obviously sleeping. I walked in very quietly and set the flowers and card on the dresser next to the bed. I leaned down and kissed him on the cheek.

I walked out of the room and went downstairs. I quickly slipped out of the house and got into my car. I just drove around in my car for awhile, gathering my thoughts and trying to relax in a way. As I was driving down Main Street, my phone rang. I picked it up on the second ring, “Hello?”

“Hi,” said the feeble voice on the other line.

“Maricar?” I asked.

“Yeah,” she said weakly.

“What’s wrong?” I asked and made a right turn, heading to my apartment.

“It’s Justin,” she managed to say, holding in her tears.

“What happened? Is he in the hospital?” I asked.

“I wish he was,” she said, sarcasm dripping from her voice, “he was cheating on me.”

“I’m sorry,” I said, “you’re better without him.”

“You knew, didn’t you?” she asked.

“Yeah,” I said quietly.

She sighed and said, “I should have known. It figures that everyone knows that he was fucking around behind my back.”

“It’s not what you think,” I said.

“Than please enlighten me Jen, what the hell is it? Was it that I wasn’t good enough? What was it?” she yelled into the phone.

“I’m not talking about him. I don’t know what his reasoning is. I didn’t want to tell you because he had sex with my sister. She didn’t even know about you,” I said.

Ignoring my last comment, she continued, “It figures that he would do that. Did he fuck you too?” she asked.

“No,” I said, “listen Maricar, I don’t know why he did that, but he made my sister feel like shit because she didn’t know about you. After they had sex, you called and he was telling you how much he loved you. She didn’t even know he had a girlfriend, but she learned quickly.”

“I know, its not like we made our relationship public or anything,” she said.

“How did you find out?” I asked.

“Well, Chris was having a party last night. I guess I wasn’t supposed to be there because everyone was giving me sympathetic looks while some gave me disgusted looks. I walked around looking for Justin, and found him fucking my best friend,” she said angrily, “I’m so pissed, I don’t know what to do.”

“Does he know, that you know?” I asked.

“Oh hell ya, I marched myself over to him and hit him on the head, then I slapped my ex-best friend across the face. I then started to scream at Justin and I pounced on him. I guess I beat him pretty bad because I heard he has a lot of bruises,” she laughed,” but, I was eventually pulled off of him by Chris.”

“I’m sorry,” I said.

“Don’t be, not your fault,” she said, “I probably would have killed him last night.”

“I would have killed him too,” I said.

“I gotta go, my mom’s here. I’ll talk to you later, bye,” she said.

“Bye,” I said and hung up the phone.

A few minutes later, I was at my apartment and I parked my car in the parking lot. When I was walked to the building, someone pulled me to the side. I yelped in pain and was slammed hard against the wall. “I know what you’ve been doing,” Nick said hatefully to me.

“What the hell are you talking about?” I asked.

“Don’t play stupid,” he said and roughly groped me.

“Leave me alone,” I said, but it seemed my pleas were drown out by his mouth pressing hard against mine. He ran his hands under my shirt and he said coldly to me, “Just pretend I’m Chris.”

“What?” I said bewildered, “What are you talking about?”

“Shut up bitch,” he said and slapped me hard against the cheek.

I kneed him between the legs and tried to run for the front door of my building complex. He reached for my legs and I slammed down onto the cold cement sidewalk. He dragged me into the ally way and pulled out a knife; “Don’t talk or you’ll get your pretty little face slashed up.”

I let out a sob as memories of Josh ran through my mind. Nick ripped my shirt off and played with the buttons of my pants. “No,” I screamed and pushed him off of me.

“Shut up slut,” He said and swung the knife at me. It hit me in the arm and I shrieked in pain. I turned and ran out into the street yelling, “Help me! Please, help me!”

He ran after me as I ran down the street, dodging cars. I ran into a store and yelled at the top of my lungs, “Help!”

“Are you okay Miss?” asked the clerk.

“No, “ I said as I felt blood dripping from my arm, “I’ve been stabbed.”

He picked up the telephone and phoned the police. Nick burst through the door, holding a gun and said, “Hang up the damn phone.”

The man hung up the phone and looked at Nick. “Don’t look at me that way,” Nick said and shot the man. I watched in horror as the man’s body fell limp to the floor. Nick slammed my body up against the large window and I fell backwards into it, shattering the glass. He walked out of the shop and picked me up.

Just then, the police arrived. “Set her down,” said one of the men.

“Fine,” Nick said and roughly threw me against the ground. I could feel pieces of glass ripping at my skin. I looked up at Nick as he held a gun to my head.

“Drop the gun,” said the police officer.

Another one of them got into the cop car and phoned the station, “We need back up.”

“Get up,” Nick said and pulled me up and pushed me into the store.

Meanwhile, the customers watched in silence as he done all of this. “Get in the corner,” Nick commanded to them. They did what he said and walked over to the corner.

“Why are you doing this?” I asked.

“Because I can and will,” he said.

I looked down at my hand and saw a trail of blood following me wherever I went. “Please don’t do this,” I said.

“Why not?” he asked.

“Because you’ll be going to prison,” I said.

“I’ll be going anyway,” he said.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because I killed my dad,” he said.

“What?” I asked, quietly, “You did what?” I could feel my stomach churning as I realized he could kill me right now, he doesn’t care.

I sat down in a nearby chair and put my head in my hands.

“Did I tell you to sit? Get the fuck up!” he said.

I looked up at him and said, “No. Kill me now since your going to kill me anyway.”

“Don’t you want to live to see Chris again?” he taunted.

“No,” I said.

“Why?” he asked.

“Because Chris thinks I’m a slut even though what happened was that I was raped,” I said.

“He what? I’m gonna go bust a cap on him,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter,” I said.

“Yes, it does,” he said and sat down next to me, “I’m sorry for doing this.”

I couldn’t answer him, and I couldn’t forgive him.

He looked over at me and brought the gun to his head, and pulled the trigger and I watched as his body fell into my lap. I screamed in horror as his blood rushed out onto me. I sat there in shock as the police rushed in. “We need an ambulance,” one of them said.

I looked down at his dead body and let tears run down my face. What seemed like an eternity later, they took his body away and I was put into a separate ambulance car. I was taken to the hospital and was examined. Later that night, I was able to wash the blood off of my body. My hand was put into a cast and Michelle came by the hospital and stayed with me all night.
