Chapter Thirty Nine

Later that night, when we arrived at the party, Chris immediately walked over to his friends, leaving me all alone.

“Hey Jen,” someone said behind me.

I turned around slowly and discovered Joey standing there. “Hi,” I said warmly.

“Did you just get here?” he asked as he took a sip of his drink.

“Yeah,” I said.

“Who’d you come here with?”

“Chris.”

“Oh,” he said knowingly, “where is he?”

“I don’t know,” I said, looking around.

“Do you want me to get you something to drink?”

“No thanks, I’m fine,” I said smiling.

“Joey, phone,” someone managed to say over the loud, booming music.

“I gotta go. I’ll talk to you later,” he said and flashed me a smile.

“Okay,” I said as he walked away. ’He is too fine,’ I thought to myself, ‘and very sweet.’ I turned around and saw Dani talking to some people. When she saw me, she motioned for me to come over. I walked over and greeted her, “Hi Dani.”

“Hello Jen,” she said and introduced me to her friends. They all were nice, but it seemed like they had a clique that I obviously didn’t fit in. I excused myself and walked outside. The sky was a beautiful shade of blue with dark clouds entwined with it. A few stars were out, but the clouds covered most of them. I could barely even see the moon.

“Hey Jen,” Justin said as he stood next to me.

“Hi,” I said and looked around for Michelle.

“She’s not here,” he said as if answering my thoughts.

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know.”

"Is she at the party?"

"Yeah, but she went off with some guy. They said they were going to get more beer," he said, looking out into the distance.

"Then they should be back soon?" I asked.

"I guess, but then again, they should have been here two hours ago," he said, looking down.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be. I just hope he didn't take advantage of her."

"What do you mean?"

"I don't really know they guy she went with. I'm just praying that he didn't do anything to her," he said and walked back into the house. I watched him leave. That man could be so difficult at times, but deep down he was very sensitive.

"Hey, I found you," Joey said grinning, "I thought you'd be thirsty by now, so I brought you some Pepsi."

"Thank you," I said as he handed me the drink. I smiled softly at him as he stood next to me. He was wearing a gray tee shirt and loose fitting jeans. He dressed very casual, which was almost funny because we both dressed that way tonight and everyone else looked all dressy.

"You look nice tonight," he said as he looked over at me.

A light chuckle escaped my lips as I looked down at myself, "Thank you, but I think I look way underdressed."

"No, it's just everyone else who is overdressed for the occasion."

"Hmm...What would that make us? Normal?" I teased.

"Never," he teased back and wrapped his arms around me, turning me to face him.

"I may not be normal, but I'm special."

"Yes you are," he said, his lips dangerously close to mine. He leaned in closer, his lips barely touching mine when a loud scream erupted from inside the house. He leaned back slightly and said, "Should we go investigate?"

"Yeah because that scream sounds like it belongs to my sister."

We pulled apart and walked into the house. All eyes were on Justin, Michelle, and some guy. "Your such a slut!" Justin yelled as he tightened his grip on her arm.

"No I'm not!" she yelled back.

"Yes you are," the other man said, "you didn't tell me you had a boyfriend."

"You never asked!" she screamed in his face as she broke away from Justin.

"God, why did I brake up with Maricar?" Justin said as he turned to walk away.

"What did you say?" Michelle shouted, getting up in Justin's face, "It's not like you'd stay faithful to her. You never were and never will. I screwed up once, so what? It's not like I didn't know where you were yesterday!"

"What are you talking about?" he asked, amused at her little act.

"I know where you were yesterday," she repeated.

"Yeah, I was over at Joey's house."

"No you weren't."

"Actually he was," Joey said, entering the conversation.

'My sister is making a fool out of herself. She should know by now that anyone in this room would lie for one of them,' I thought to myself as I entered the kitchen.

"Hi, I'm Audra," Lance's girlfriend said as she noticed I was in the room.

"Hello," I said. She was very pretty. She had strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes. She used to work for *NSYNC, but is now working with a new group called Sons of Harmony. From what I heard, the group is very good.

"Your sister is quite the trouble maker," she said as she walked across the kitchen.

"You can say that again," I mumbled.

"You and Joey seem to get along well," she said smiling, "I do think it's time for him to have a stable girlfriend, not an off and on one."

"What are you talking about?"

"Joey's ex girlfriend Kelly. They've been dating off and on since high school."

"Joey and I aren't going out though," I said confused.

"You aren't?" she said surprised, "I'm almost positive that Dani said you were."

"No," Dani said, entering the conversation, "I said they would make a cute couple."

"Oh, sorry," Audra said as she puled some dip out of the refrigerator.

"You two should get the hook up," Dani said to me.

"I don't really know him," I said.

"Then you two should spend some time together."

"Okay," I said, hoping to get the conversation ended.

"Good," Dani said, taking a bite of her pizza.
