Chapter Three

I walked into my apartment satisfied with the events of today. I smiled when I thought of how perfect it was. He was quick charming. He took me to a small Chinese restaurant and then we saw an off Broadway production of Guys and Dolls.

I walked into my bedroom and changed into an oversized tee shirt and sat down at my vanity. I ran a brush through my hair and thought back at the conversation in the car in front of my apartment complex.

FLASHBACK:

“Thank you for tonight,” I said smiling.

“You’re welcome, I had a lot of fun,” he said, flashing me a smile. He reached his hand up and traced my jaw line. He leaned in and kissed me softly. We pulled apart and he smiled again, “So I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Yeah,” I said.

“I can’t wait until then,” he said and I opened the car door.

“Bye,” I said.

“Bye.”

I got out of the car and shut the door. As I walked to the door of my complex, I turned around and watched him leave.

END OF FLASHBACK

I sighed at the thought and lightly touched my lips, wishing it were his on mine. I picked up the phone and dialed Ashley’s number.

On the third ring, an unfamiliar voice answered the phone, “Hello?”

“Hi, is Ashley there?”

“Yeah, who’s this?”

“Monica.”

“Oh,” the person said and handed the phone to Ashley. “Hello,” she said.

“Hi! Who was that?”

“A friend,” she said sarcastically.

“Are you drunk?” I asked, wondering why she was being harsh.

“No, I’m not smashed,” she said. “Yeah you are,” someone said in the background. “Shut up,” she yelled and covered up the phone. She said something, but I could hear her.

“Are you having a party?” I asked.

“Yes and you can’t come,” she said bluntly.

“Why can’t I come?” I asked.

“Because I said so,” she said childishly and hung up the phone.

“That’s mean,” I said aloud and hung up the phone. I set over and set my alarm clock, and then I crawled in bed. Almost instantly, I fell asleep.

I woke up with a start. I quickly Got dressed and took a jog. When I came back home, I got a shower and got dressed. I quickly eat and then headed to rehearsal. As soon as I got there, I stretched.

When I was almost done, JC walked into the room, looking as fine as usual. He walked over to me and said, “Hey beautiful.”

“Hi.”

He looked me up and down and said, “Do you wanna hang out again tonight?”

“Sure,” I said smiling.

“Good. Maybe we could stay at your place and watch movies.”

“Yeah, that sounds good.”

“Well, I’ll be there around eight.”

“Okay,” I said as Darren walked into the room.

“Now lets get down to business,” he began, “let’s go over the steps from yesterday one last time, then we’ll dance with the music.”

I glanced over at my right and noticed that JC and the rest of the guys from *NSYNC were dancing with us today. JC flashed me a million dollar smile and I returned. Something about his smile didn't seem right. Maybe it was the way he seemed like it pained him to smile or was it that his eyes seem clouded with something other than me. All those thoughts soon left me after I started to concentrate on the music.

On our lunch break, I was talking to Mark. “You know Monica,” he began, “I think we’ve met before. Do you know a girl named Leslie Thompson?”

“Yeah, I went to high school with a girl by that name. Why?”

"I knew that I knew you from somewhere, I met you through Leslie. I'm her cousin that she called Skip," he said, emphasizing on Skip.

"Oh my, I remember you! You look so different now, you look really good, not that you weren't before." The last time I saw him, he was sort of dorky, but now he’s a hottie.

"I remember too. I was in love with you back then," he said smiling, "we went out for a week or two."

"Yup," I said, also smiling.

"But then you dumped me," he said.

"I didn't really want a boyfriend then."

"It's okay."

"How's Leslie? I haven't seen her since graduation," I asked.

He was about to answer me when Darren said, "Break is over."

"Tell me later," I said and stood up. I threw away my trash and walked into the rehearsal room.

We got done around five, so I went to the grocery store and picked up some food and movies for tonight. I got a quick shower and got dressed. I had on jeans and a black top. I let my hair dry and I also put on some make up.

I was ready around seven thirty, so I made some popcorn. When the popcorn was done, I put it in a bowl and went into the living room. I sat on the couch and waited for him.

There was a knock on the door around eight fifteen. I got up from the couch and answered it. There he was wearing a deep green shirt and khakis, he looked really good.

"Hi," I said and opened the door more so that he could come in.

"Hey," he said and followed me into the living room. I put the first movie in and sat next to JC. Halfway through the movie, he put his arms around me. When the second movie was playing, he began to kiss me. First, they were sweet and soft, but as we continued to kiss, the more passionate they became.

Suddenly, he stopped. "What?" I asked as he stood up.

"I Have to go," he said, avoiding eye contact with me.

"Okay," I said and fixed my shirt.

"Bye," he said and let himself out.

'That was weird,' I thought to myself as I rewound the video.

Just then, the phone rang. "Hello?" I said and I picked it up.

"Hey," said Ashley.

"I thought you didn't want to speak to me," I said, still angry about how she treated me last night.

"What do you mean?"

"You treated me like shit last night."

"No I didn't," she said, obviously not remembering.

"Yes you did. You basically said that you were too good for me."

"Oh, so did you have a date tonight?" she said, hinting as if she knew something I didn't.

"Yes."

"With who?"

"JC."

"I think he likes you."

"So do I, but we started to kiss and he..."

"Really?" Ashley said skeptically, cutting me off.

"Yeah, we began to but he just like, stopped and left."

"Oh that’s too bad," she said sarcastically.

"What's wrong?" I asked, referring to her sudden lack of interest.

"Nothing, but I have to go."

"Bye."

"Bye," she said and I hung up the phone.
