Chapter Eleven

“Chris,” I said softly and gently touched him on his shoulder, “are you mad?” The silence between us was killing me slowly as every minute passed. It seemed as if we were in this car for years, not minutes.

He shrugged his shoulders, but didn’t respond. He kept his eyes on the endless stretch of road. He appeared to be in thought, so I decided not to bother him. I glanced out my window at the scenery as we pasted. It seemed to keep me calm, although my mind was racing a mile a minute. I know that he isn’t mad at me, but I don’t particularly like this silent treatment that he’s giving me. I didn’t do anything to upset him; he shouldn’t be doing this to me…

I must have fallen asleep because the next thing that I remember is waking up and noticing it was dark outside. I looked at the clock and it read 10:23. “Chris, why didn’t you wake me up? Have you been driving this whole time?”

“I didn’t want to wake you up,” he said, and glanced over at me.

“Do you know where we are?”

“Yeah, we’re close to Champaign, Illinois.”

“Oh,” I said quietly and looked outside, it seemed almost the same as where we were before, but then again, its night time and everything is really dark.

“I can’t believe him,” JC muttered to himself as he got onto the bus.

“Neither can I, he can’t just miss a concert,” Lance added.

They didn’t have a very good show tonight due to the fact that Chris wasn’t there and that they were worried about him, this isn’t like him.

“Dani called,” Joey said softly, so that just JC and Lance would hear.

“What did she say?” Lance asked.

“Oh, what did she say?” Justin said sarcastically, knowing that he wasn’t meant to hear, as he entered the room.

“Nothing much,” Joey said.

“Then if it was not that important, why wouldn’t you have told me.”

“I don’t know,” he said and gave Justin a weird look, “you never seemed to care before.”

“Whatever,” Justin said and left.

“What did she really say?” JC asked.

“She wanted to know if everything she had heard was true.”

“Did you tell her the truth?”

“No,“ Joey said and looked away. He lied about his conversation about Dani; he didn’t want them to know that he told her everything. Not just what transpired in the past week, but everything that has happened over the years that she didn’t know. He felt a little bad because he really liked Jen, but he always had a weak spot for Dani.

Nobody knew this, but he’s always loved Dani. He met her before she knew Chris. They shared a brief romance together, but she didn’t feel that she loved him enough. She then broke his heart again by going out with Chris and acting as if he meant nothing to her.

“Hey Joey,” JC said and snapped his fingers.

“What?” Joey asked as he looked up.

“Never mind,” JC said and turned away from him.

I opened my eyes to the sun glaring at me. I sat up and looked at the clock, 11:34 am. “Chris, have you been driving all night?”

“Yeah,” he said sleepily.

“Chris, pull over,” I said gently.

“What?” he said, getting more alert, “why?”

“Because, you’re tired, I’ll drive.”

“No,” he said, acting like a typical male.

“Yes Chris, you’re tired,” I said firmly. He reluctantly pulled over and we switched places.
