Chapter Three

I parked my car and got out. I stood in front of my house for a few minutes; just thinking to myself as memories hit me. I was so happy when I bought this house, it was my first house I owned and it was beautiful. It was a white, two-story house with blue shutters. The widow surrounding the door was made by the previous owner and was breathtaking, that’s how good he made it.

I walked up to the porch and got my mail. I tucked it under my arm and unlocked the door. I walked into the house and turned on some lights. I sat down at my dining room table and read through my mail. Bills, bills, bills, and letter addressed to me with no forwarding address. I opened it slowly, and discovered a little card. An old friend of mine from high school is having a big bash for her thirtieth birthday.

I set the card aside and stood up. I slowly walked upstairs and drew a bath for myself. I got in and relaxed for a bit. I finally got out when I decided that it was late. I wrapped a towel around my body and walked into my room. I put on an oversized tee shirt and got into bed and soon fell asleep.

Dani laid back in bed and pulled the covers over herself. Chris was sound asleep next to her and almost immediately wrapped his arms around her as she got situated. She turned to face the wall and closed her eyes, but the sleep wouldn’t come.

After 2 am, she got out of bed and quickly crept over to the dresser. She put on a pair of jeans and slipped on her shoes. She grabbed her jacket and put it on. She tip toed over to Chris and made sure he was asleep. She grabbed the hotel key and walked out of the hotel room.

As she made her way down to the lobby, she quickly made a few phone calls and then called for a cab. She put on her hood, making sure it covered her hair and walked outside. There were a few fans still outside, but luckily no one noticed her. She patiently waited for her cab, twisting her wedding ring in her hand. As the cab pulled up, she pulled out the piece of paper she wrote her information on and got in. She quickly told him the directions and soon they were off.

“Ugh,” I mumbled as I heard the doorbell ring. I rolled over and looked at the clock, 2:26 am. I slowly got out of bed and slipped my robe on. I clumsily made my way downstairs and opened the door. I stood there, shocked to see Dani again.

“Uh hi,” she said, standing there in the pouring rain.

“Come in,” I said and ushered her in.

“Beautiful home,” she commented as we walked into the kitchen.

“Thank you,” I said as we sat down at the table.

Dani took off her coat and hung it on the chair. She ran a hand threw her hair and absentmindedly said, “So…”

I laughed a little and said, “This is still so very awkward.”

“Your right,” she said and laughed.

“I’m still very sorry,” I said.

“Don’t be, I’m over it,” she said.

“Oh,” I said quietly.

She smiled a little and shifted uncomfortably in her seat.

“Um…Why’d you come here? How did you know where I lived?” I asked.

“I found out from the operator and why’d I come here, that’s a little hard. I honestly don’t know,” she said and laughed softly, ”I was up all night and I continued to think of you and everything that happened. I guess I just really missed you. I really shouldn’t, but I knew you liked him since you first met him, that’s why I was so cold to you.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, interrupting her.

“It was obvious that you had feelings for him. When I started to get to know you, I realized that you loved him. You always have.”

“No I don’t, I hate him.”

“He was your first everything, you don’t forgot them that easily and they will always have a place in your heart. That why I always ignored the signs. Maybe I should have told you about him cheating on me. I don’t know why I didn’t.”

“I wish you would have,” I said.

“Yeah I should have,” she said and looked out the window.

“Does he know you’re here?” I asked, breaking the silence.

“No, he was asleep when I left.”

“Oh,” I said.

She looked over at the stand next to the table and picked up the magazine lying there, “National Enquirer? Do you read this garbage?” She was about to say something else, but stopped as she looked closely at the cover, “Oh.”

“Do you see why I bought it,” I said as I stood up and walked over to the fridge.

“Where were these pictures from?” she asked as she scanned the pictures.

“Up in Clarion when Chris was in that parade,” I said as I pulled out the milk.

“Oh,” she said and looked at the other women, “they’re all beautiful.”

“But none could ever compare to you,” I said grabbed a glass, “do you want some milk?”

“No thanks,” she said.

“Okay,” I said as I poured myself some. I put the milk back and returned to where I was sitting previously.

“I’m thinking of leaving him,” she said and took her wedding ring off her finger. She set it down on the table and looked at me, “Do you think I should?”

“That’s up to you.”

“Your no help,” she said with a laugh.

“I know,” I said and laughed along with her.

“Can I ask you a question,” she said and looked at me seriously.

“Yeah,” I said.

“Whatever happened between you and Michelle?”

“Honestly, I don’t know. One day we were sisters, the next, strangers.”

“She talks about you a lot, but always says rude things.”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know. Like, she calls you names and just childish stuff.”

“Oh,” I said and looked down, “ I really don’t know what happened except that she chose you people over me.”

“Don’t be so quick to say you people. I don’t really like Michelle anymore. To be quite honest, she’s a slut.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, she cheats on Justin all the times, but then again, he cheats on her too,” Dani said, “you honestly have no clue on what happened?”

“Well, maybe a little,” I said.

“Tell me.”

“One day, I was coming home from work and I remember this so well because I got fired that day, and I saw Justin loading things into a blue truck. He looked surprised when he saw me because he probably thought I should have been at work. Well, I walked up the stairs and walked into the apartment and found that Michelle had everything of hers and some of my things packed up and gone.”

“Then what happened?” Dani asked.

“She told me that she couldn’t believe that I was her sister. That how could I be so cruel. She also said that I deserved everything that happened to me.”

“That was harsh,” Dani said.

“Yeah it was,” I said.
