OLD FASHION
HALLOWEEN

The fun of past Halloweens is mostly just a "memory" now.
Parties are held....
but they can't hold a candle to the kind of fun we use to have.
I don't remember the kinds of Halloweens like my Dad use to tell me about....
I didn't pull pranks like my Dad and his youthful friends did.
Unlike Dad, I never turned over an outhouse....
or sent a younger kid to go "snipe hunting"....
or have the ventroqualist send his voice through a wall
of a stone gate or through a horse...
but then I wasn't a World War I Veteran either.
I am privileged enough to be a Nurse to our Veteran's.
That gives me a candle stick of pride on their behalf.

Maybe my memories weren't as significant as my Dad's
would have been. Still, I didn't miss out on all the fun....
I do remember what a special "family" time it was.
Elsie and Bill lived out in the country...
They always came to our house to see the trick or treaters.
Elsie made the best homemade doughnuts....
carmel apples....and popcorn balls...
Mom and Dad bought the store bought goodies.
The treats were always plentiful.

Lots of kids came to the house.
Most years we had over a hundred Trick or Treaters.
Of course, that was back in the days
when you could leave your house unlocked
if you went to town and real "terror" was something you read about
in a remote place that really maybe didn't even exist...
Kids weren't hurt when they went trick or treating.
No one had to go to the Emergency Room
to have their bag of goodies checked out through laser beam.
Halloween was a time for creativity
and stirring up some fun.

Just like most kids everywhere,
there was a house in our town that we were convinced was haunted.
Eventually, it was condemned and torn down
but the memories live on.
Around Halloween, all the kids knew if there was ONE house
you avoided in the neighborhood,
that was the one sure fire one to stay away from...or face the consequences
of the REAL GOBLINS and GHOSTS and whatever your fate might be......

It was lots of fun to give my fellow Trick or Treaters
such yummy treats..and watch them do their tricks.
When it was my turn, Mom and Elsie or sometimes Dad
would go out with me trick or treating.
Elsie and I had the best talks during these times.
She was a very important figure in my childhood life.

Through the years, I drifted apart from Elsie
and Bill. They were busy with their own kids and grandkids.
Still, I hold the memories ever close to my heart.
When I learned Bill died, I knew a chapter of my life
had closed. In my "Halloween Memories"
he will live on as a dear and special friend.
Thanks to them, I knew the meaning of what
Halloween REALLY was about...
I hope their harvest is plentiful
and the moon of plenty shines in their Paradise.

In summary: Bill Sharp and his wife, Elsie
were my parent's fishing buddies,
dominoe buddies, all around great friends and key figures in my childhood....
Ahhh sweet memories...gone are the days of "homemade goodies"
that Elsie would always make by the hundreds
for the crowds of trick or treaters....
and of course her favorite trick or treater *yours truly*
got the pick of all the goodies.
Yum....carmel apples, popcorn balls, doughnuts.....
relishing, lovely tastes of yesterday. Nostalgic memories
remind me how blessed I am to have enjoyed this wonderful memory.
