Update on animals in Spain: Correspondence from SOS GALGOS, Barcelona, Spain:

Animals in an animal control facility in Mataro, Spain, a town located near Barcelona, were put down with gas. The gas did not kill the animals. They were burned alive. The company responsible for this outrage still holds the contract for animal control in that region. The company was fined about $20,000.00 and prohibited from doing euthanasia in the Mataro shelter but continues to hold the contract for animal control in Mataro and for many other shelters in that region.

Despite the atrocities which happened in the Mataro facility, currently there are no enforceable laws in Spain to stop these crimes. The Spanish penal code does not include animal cruelty as a reason to receive prison sentences. There is a proposal for new regulations on methods of euthanasia by the Catalan government. The proposal is an extension of the Catalan law for protection of animals which was written twelve years ago. However, the proposal is still waiting for development and for enforcement.
