A tribute to Officer Steve Jerman

There arent too many people in Kane that can say they didnt know Steve Jerman. He was one popular guy in this town. And thanks to some 18 year old piece of trailor park trash he isnt with us anymore. Jerman was born on March 28, 1952 in Warren, PA. After getting a law enforcement degree and serving this town for over a decade, Jerman decided to take an extra step, and try to bring the D.A.R.E. program to Kane. The first class to graduate from the program was the Class of 2001. He definately enjoyed the job of educating kids about the dangers of drugs. My class was the second to graduate from the DARE program. We got a T-shirt, a diploma, a water bottle, and a medal. He was a DARE officer until that tragic night. February 20 wont be forgotten in Kane. At around 4:15 AM, Jerman pulled over a car for tailgating down at South Overpark. A girl that was in the back hollered at the driver to shoot Jerman and the jabroni decided to shoot. Jerman was shot in the chest. However, somehow he was able to return fire and wound his assailant. When paramedics arrived Jerman was pronounced dead. His assailant is behind bars at this time, and if convicted will recieve the death penalty. A few nights later there was a public funeral at the Kane High School. Everyone paid their last respects. Afterwards there was a precesion, with nearly 300 emergency vehicles that drove through downtown Kane. There were vehicles from all over the country. Downtown Kane was packed with people holding candles in Jerman's memory. Today there is a memorial standing at South Overpark, the spot where Jerman was killed. It sure is a sad topic to discuss, and it goes to show that even in a boring small town like Kane, theres definately crime. Jerman will never be forgotten. R.I.P. Steve Jerman, Godspeed.
