Fixing a Broken Seat Heater
HOME

How to fix a non-working seat heater.

If you have a seat heater that doesn't work it is most usually caused by a broken wire that goes to the seat back heater pad. The wire to the seat back pad heater has to endure the seat back being pulled forward and backward. Also you can see that it is held by a clip to the grey heater pad. The problem is that the wire to the heater is covered by two black outer layers that are very stiff. This means that the only place where the wire bends is at the place where it also makes a ninety degree turn. This will never work too long. You only have to remove the leather seat back a little to get at the broken wire. The leather is held there by metal tabs which you can bend out a little bit and then pull the leather off it. You have to start from one side and work your way over. To fix the broken wire all you need to do is use a splice connector and reconnect the wires. The wires are 18 gauge so they are not too hard to work with. I also removed the outer wire covering back about eight inches so that the wire can flex and not break. It's so nice to have working heated seats in winter!

The wire is broken clean off. The wires going into the grey heater pad are covered by the material. You will need to pull back the fabric a bit to get access to the wires.

This is where the wires break on both seats that I took apart. You can see how the wire is likely to break with all that insulation and the tight bend that the wire is trying to make.
This is after the extra nylon wire covering has been removed and the wires have been reconnected.
