How to set the timing:

1. Turn the crankshaft pulley with the 21 MM bolt until the timing mark is at Top Dead Center. The lower cover says "TC" on it and has a little notch. You should mark the crankshaft pulley notch by putting some white paint or White-Out in the little groove that is cut into the lower pulley. This will also help you when you are setting the correct initial timing later. Now the crankshaft is set to Top Dead Center.

2. Now you can set the Cam timing. The cam pulley has a triangular notch on it. With the timing belt removed, turn the cam pulley with the center bolt until the triangular marker lines up with the center mark on the rear timing cover. It will have three plastic fingers on it. You want the triangular marker to be pointing down at the center mark.
NOTE: If you don't have the three finger pointer then just take a piece of string and it will make a straight line between the center of the cam gear bolt, the timing marker notch and the center of the auxillary pulley bolt. The cam gear triangular notch will be below the cam gear bolt, not above it. Now the cam is set to Top Dead Center.

3. Next, look at the distributor cap. You will see the number "1" is marked on the distributor cap. Some caps don't have this so you may have to find out where number "1" is. Paint a white mark on the side of the distributor to line up with the number "1" plug. Mark the distributor, not the cap. Next remove the cap and check to see that the rotor button is pointing to that mark. This will usually be at about the Four O'clock position. If it's not pointing near the white mark that you made then move the auxillary shaft pulley until it is. You want number "1" and the rotor to be at the Four-O'clock position. Now the distributor is set to Top Dead Center.

4. Now put the tensioner and timing belt on. Loosen the bolt slightly that holds the tensioner spring but tighten the tensioner adjustment bolt so that the belt doesn't jump one tooth. Turn the engine over three times to align the belt on the pulleys. Recheck all the marks. If any of the marks are not lined up correctly then move that pulley by releasing the tension on the belt and moving it until it lines up correctly. Now tighten the tensioner adjusting bolt and the other tensioner bolt. One is 13 MM and the other is 17 MMM.

5. Now you have to set the timing. First check the spark plug firing order on top of the distributor, 1-3-4-2. Then remove or unplug the Spout Connector, it's on the wiring harness that plugs into the distributor. It is about 8 inches back from the distributor. Next, hook up your timing light and check the timing. Move the distributor until you have the timing set to the factory specs. Usually that's 10 degrees BTDC(Before Top Dead Ceneter) for a manual transmission or 13 degrees BTDC for an automatic transmission. Don't forget to re-install the Spout Connector. After the Spout Connector is reinstalled you will see about 30 degrees of timing at idle.
