We started Cousin`s Club about 20 years ago. I can`t believe it`s that long ago. We were all the first cousins who lived close enough to be able to get together once a year for a whole weekend. Male cousins were not invited. Just wanted it to be a ladies` weekend. Our parents are sisters and one brother. We stem from them.
As time passed, my sister Babe, the oldest cousin, (she`ll love that), thought it was a good idea to invite our daughters in law, and in my case, my daughter Amy. Photo below is of the 7 of us.
We have so many fun memories from those weekends we used to take. Some in New Jersey, New York, and of course the Pocono`s. Actually, the first Cousin`s was up here in the mountains. We went to dinner in a place called the Country Inn, then went on to Mount Airy Lodge for entertainment. In front of Mt. Airy is a huge fountain, where water cascades. It`s lovely.
Always the instigator, I told the girls that it would be fun to take off our shoes and wade thru it....so they did, unbeknownst to them, that I just sat back and watched them! I had no intentions of getting wet! Gee, I just loved making them do all that crazy stuff.
It was always me, that made the toast at our dinners. I`d start off by saying, that if my grandfather hadn`t died, none of them would be here!!! Every year I said it!! Every year, they told me to shut up and sit down! Or, they`d say, "Here it comes again"! It was always good for laugh.
We`d buy each other gifts, and I guess we all have our favorite`s, that we got as presents. Mine was the beautiful cigarette lighter from Linda, with Marchesa inscribed on it. Another was the gold Nefertiti charm Barbara bought me, I wore it for about 18 years!
The sisters, Nancy and Linda, are as different as day and night. Both beauty`s in there own right. Nancy just shakes her finger at us, in disapproval, Linda gives us the finger!! I probably fit the latter category, too..
There was one Cousin`s get together that will always remain my favorite, and the funniest, and the craziest of all.
My nephew Bob, made resevations for a hotel near the famous Meadowlands, where all big time sports are held, football, etc. It was the Sheridan. a really nice place, and we had two suites amongst us. So, we had lots of fun, between the two rooms. Got dressed for dinner and headed for this lovely sky high resaturant in the hotel. Where we were able to see the New York skyline from our table. Please keep in mind this was the first year we finally got my sister to join us. It was a sad time for Babe, and me too. My brother-in-law Ed had died that July (1983), and this was October. We thought a fun night would be just what the doctor ordered. Oh boy, was it!! As we were waiting for the elevator to take us to the dining floor, we heard voices, and lo and behold, here come the biggest men we had every seen in our lives. My sister said something that will loose in the translation, if I repeat it. After she did, she turned colors and tried to step back and get between us girls. One of these "huge trees" said, "Don`t be afraid, we won`t bite". It was the Kansas City Chiefs!!!
As we were eating dinner, a gentleman walked over to our table, and introuduced himself as the newscaster for the football team. Hello!!! We all looked over to the table they were sitting at, and there they were!! The newscaster, asked us to join them for a drink after dinner. Well, we all looked at each other, and said, "YES"!! So, when dinner was finished, one of these massive men came over and said, he would go ahead to the Sports Lounge and make sure there were enough seats for all of us. Now, we`re all heading out of the dining room, and my sister whispers to me, "I`m not getting in any car, with these guys!" It still strikes me funny! I said, "Babe, the lounge is downstairs, we`re not leaving the hotel"! Being my big (little) sister, I was sure she was going to smack me.
Well, we went into the lounge, and they practically moved a whole crowd of people out so we could all sit together. The music was blasting and we could barely hear each other. They started to play music that we all love to dance too, didn`t expect these huge guys to jump on the floor with us, too. That was the beginning of a fun night of dancing and acting silly. My sister didn`t get up to dance, and one of the men sat back down and talked to Babe. She told him she had just lost Ed, he was so kind and understanding to her, that he sat there all night so she wouldn`t be alone when we were dancing. Found out he was the teams doctor. After a certain time, they were told to leave, because they had a game the next day. So, we all said goodnight, they left, we left! They would not allow us to take any photos of them, for fear of trouble. Meaning not knowing who we were, fearing bad publicty. The newscaster told us to put Tv on when we got home, and of course we did. During the game, he said, "To all you beautiful cousins, have a safe trip home"! We thought that was so cool!
They played the NY Giants or the Jets, that Sunday, I can`t remember which. I do remember they lost!!
We still laugh over that crazy, funfilled day. Just ask Linda, she'll tell ya, LOL!!!
