Tragic Loss
Chapter 5

Erica and Stephanie walked outside quickly and decided to take Erica's car. “Erica, go fast, we’re gonna be late if we don’t haul ass,” Stephanie commanded. “All right, I know, but at least we look good,” Erica replied with a dreamy smile. Stephanie and Erica rode the rest of the way to Howie’s with the heater and radio on to drown out any conversation of their hidden secret. Both girls know they were both thinking the same thoughts: of how great it would be to see their boyfriends again and about the man they had hit and who he was…. A few minutes later Stephanie and Erica pulled up into Howie’s driveway. Both girls got out of their car and walked up to the front door. Erica turned to Stephanie quickly and whispered, ”Try not to look tired or worried about this whole incident. We can't give anyone any clues as to what happened.” Stephanie nodded in agreement and quickly tried to make herself look presentable for the Boys. “Ready?” Steph asked. “As I’ll ever be,” Erica responded. Stephanie and Erica walked through the door and looked around. There was music blasting through the speakers. The song was “Smooth” by Santana. Sitting on the sofa was Howie and his girlfriend, Claudia. “Hey Claud, Hey Howie,” Stephanie and Erica said in unison. “Hey!” Howie responded cheerfully. Claudia kind of nodded and smiled. Claudia looked like her usual self with a tight black tube dress on. “Where's AJ?” Steph asked. “He’s in there,” Claudia answered as she pointed to the kitchen, “and Bri’s in there too." "Thanks,” Erica replied quickly. Erica and Steph headed towards the kitchen to find their boyfriends. They walked in the kitchen to see AJ eating some chips and Brian hanging up Howie’s telephone. “There's my baby!” AJ declared rushing to Stephanie, sweeping her up into a tight hug. "Hey Bone” Stephanie whispered into AJ’s ear. “Hi Brian!” Erica exclaimed. Brian gave her a wave and a quick kiss on the check. After both couples had said their hellos and chatted for a few minutes they headed to the living room to sit with Howie and Claudia. Howie and Claudia were talking on the sofa and Nick was sitting in front of the TV fully unaware of the his surroundings. He was playing Nintendo as usual. Kevin was sitting in a chair looking depressed. “Hey Kevvy,” Erica said. "Hey.” Kevin said glumly. "Where's Kat?” Stephanie asked. “She hasn't showed yet, I guess I’ll go call her,” Kevin said as he got up and walked in the kitchen to call his girlfriend of two years. "Ok, hey Nick,” Erica said. Nick didn't pay her the tiniest bit of recognition. “Nick!!!!” Steph shouted. “Huh?!” Nick cried startled. “Oh hey guys, wanna play?” Nick offered. “Sure, I’ll challenge you and I’ll bet I will kick your ass too!” Stephanie said sitting down beside Nick and picking up a controller. “We’ll see…” Nick shot back grinning. He gave Steph a wink as they started. Erica, Brian, Howie, and Claudia were all catching up and talking about the tour. They hadn't heard a peep out of Kevin. “Where’s Ke—" Brian started to ask when the room went dark all of a sudden. A woman's piercing scream shot through the darkness. All they could do was sit in confusion.
