The above sketch by a "French officer of the expeditionary
force" is of the exodus of Orthodox Christians who were
fleeing the massacres by Moslems in Damascus of their fellow
Christians. St. Raphael's mother was pregnant with him at the
time of their family's fleeing to Beirut and could very well
have been among those seen by this same soldier. The holy new
martyr Joseph
of Damascus, killed during this massacre, was the family's
parish priest |
