Model 1850 Militia Non-Commissioned Officer's Sword, unmarked
This sword is brass-hilted with a straight, double-edged, 25" blade tapering to a sharp point. A cross-section of the blade would be eliptical. Blade is unmarked and incredibly bright, with occaisional splotchy discoloration. There are a few tiny patches of surface rust on the lower half of the blade. No pitting or significant nicks on the edges.
The brass of the hilt has a beautiful, aged patina the color of an old copper penny. The pommel is a knight's head design. The guard has a langet on both sides of the blade containing a federal shield cast into the brass. It is slightly loose . Grip is the original fluted bone or ivory, is in excellent condition and 100% intact.
The scabbard of the sword is 100% intact and original. It is leather with plain, sheet-brass mounts. The top mount has a frog stud on the obverse side. The leather is somewhat dried out, has minor flaking in spots, but is stiff and solid. The upper mount is no longer attached to the leather, although it is present. You don't see many of these with the scabbard, especially in this good condition.
Overall, I'd say this sword is in fine-to-excellent condition.
