The Who

The guy on the left is Pete Townshend, who played guitar and wrote most of the songs. Next to Pete, is Keith Moon, the drummer. Next to Keith is Roger Dalrey, the singer, and the fellow at the top who looks bored is the bass player, John Entwistle.

Pete, in my own opinion, is a genious. He was also the one who started the Who's habit of smashing things. He'd bash his guitar to pieces, then Keith would smash up his drums :-) What fun. Keith was a bit on the crazy side, nicknamed "Moon the Loon." He was *very* wild. In my opinion he was the greatest drummer ever, but that's just my opinion isn't it. He died far too young, tragically, of an overdose. Roger is the lead singer, and is responsible for the Who's gruff vocal sound. He also looks dang good running around shirtless all the time ;-) John is an *amazing* bass player. Watch any Who video, and you'll see and hear it. His fingers fly! Also, he turns looking bored into an art form ;-)

My favorite Who songs are "Baba O'Riley" and (since I heard it live) "I'm One". I generally don't listen to any Who music after 1978, because to me, it just isn't the same thing without "Moonie". However, lately on tour the group have Zak Starkey (yes, he's the son of Richard Starkey, a.k.a. "Ringo Starr") playing drums for them. He's fantastic! Nobody could ever replace Moonie, but Zak is the only person capable of filling in for him and actually doing it well. To see Zak on stage with The Who is an amazing experience. Of any drummer since Keith, I'd say he's the very best.

The Who's tour this year is going very well. I had the great fortune to see them Jun 29th in Pittsburgh. I have my pics scanned, but I need to get the scans cleaned up a bit. That's been giving me some trouble because my computer is being difficult.
