“Round numbers are always fun,” Ruutu said of reaching the 600-game mark. “I’m sure when you’re done, you look at it and see how many games you’ve played. It feels good.”

Ruutu, an undrafted Finn, played at Michigan Tech and didn’t begin his North American pro career until 1999, when he was already 24.

“It was always my goal to play in NHL, but it wasn’t the easiest route. I was never the top guy on any team, battling against the odds, but I always believed in it, even though nobody else did. If you work hard, you get rewarded.”
