Joseph R. Butler, was born and reared in Pennsylvania, and was a carpenter by trade and vocation. In the old Keystone state he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Shultz, a daughter of John Shultz, a representative farmer of Fayette county, that state. After his marriage Joseph R. Butler removed to Cameron, West Virginia, where he remained about two years, at the expiration of which he returned with his family to Pennsylvania, locating in Greene county, where he continued to follow his trade until 1873, in which year his cherished and devoted wife was summoned to the "land of the leal." Within the same year Mr. Butler removed with his children to Fayette county, Pennsylvania, where he passed the remainder of his life, his death occurring in 1899, at which time he was sixty-nine years of age.
