Attack Information
The Pokémon that uses this move will be switched for a Pokémon of the player’s choice. If no other non-fainted Pokémon are on the user's team, Baton Pass will automatically fail.

The switch will occur with the same speed and priority as any normal attack used by that Pokémon. A variety of state information from the using Pokémon will be copied to the Pokémon that is brought in by use of this move. The most well-known of the state information that is passed are stat-changes, but there are several others.

The stat-changes that are passed are the step-level (termed BTLs in the Gameboy game) changes to the stats, not the actual stats.

Gameboy Behavior
The state information that is passed is as follows (any moves not mentioned do not pass in any way):

Stat changers - this consists of moves whose primary or secondary effects include the decrease or increase of stats in steps. The stats being Attack, Defense, Speed, Special Attack, Special Defense, Accuracy, and Evade. Almost all stat modifications present on the Pokémon using Baton Pass will be passed. The only stat modifications that will not be passed are those imposed by the status conditions PAR and BRN (see Status Conditions).

Defense Curl – The primary effect of this move is to alter the Defense stat. The transfer of the primary effect is covered above. The secondary effect of the move as it pertains to the move Rollout also transfers via the use of Baton Pass.

Minimize – Like Defense Curl, the primary effect of this move is as a stat changer and is covered under the above section. The secondary effect of the move as it pertains to the move Stomp also transfers via the use of Baton Pass.

Confusion status - No matter how the confusion status is inflicted upon a Pokémon, if it uses Baton Pass, the recipient will become confused. This is limited to the actual confusion status. While the effects of Attract are similar, it is not confusion and does not pass under any circumstances.

Partial trapping moves - These are moves like Bind and Whirlpool, which have a secondary effect of trapping the victim of the attack for a limited number of turns. There is a limited transfer with these moves. If a Pokémon who is trapped by them uses Baton Pass to escape, the Pokémon that comes in during the transfer will now be trapped. However, the Pokémon that uses the trapping move must stay in for the trapping side effect to remain. Even when Baton Pass is employed, if the Pokémon that has used the move leaves play, the trapping side effect will wear off.

Mean Look, Spider Web - Victims will be affected in the same way as the moves where trapping is a side effect (in other words Baton Pass can get them out, but the Pokémon that comes in will still be trapped). In the case of these moves, however, the user can switch via Baton Pass and the victim will still remain trapped.

Curse - The non ghost-applied version is simply a stat changer, so it is covered by the information above. The ghost-applied version also transfers. The pokemon that is swapped in will lose one-quarter of its HP (rounded down) every turn.

Focus Energy - The effects of this move will transfer over to the new user transferred in via Baton Pass.

Foresight - The effects of this move will transfer over if the victim of the attack uses Baton Pass.

Leech Seed - If the victim of a Leech Seed switches out via Baton Pass, the Pokémon that switches in will also be afflicted with the effects of Leech Seed.

Lock-On – “Bridging” of the effect will occur when either Pokémon switches immediately following the use of this move. This is true of a normal switch and one via Baton Pass.

Mist - The effects of this move will transfer over to the new user transferred in via Baton Pass.

Nightmare - When a Pokémon is afflicted with HP loss by Nightmare, the HP loss can be passed on via Baton Pass if the Pokémon that is coming in already has the SLP condition. In order for the Nightmare HP loss to be passed over in this manner, the victim will need to be able to perform Baton Pass while asleep. This can only be done if the victim uses Sleep Talk. The HP loss will not pass otherwise.

Perish Song - If switching is performed via Baton Pass, the Pokémon that is brought in will have the same Perish Song count as the Pokémon that switched out (if it was at 2 for the old one, it will be at 2 for the new one).

Substitute - A Substitute passed on via a switch using Baton Pass will acquire the color pattern of the Pokémon it switches to. The only attribute of a Substitute that is known to pass is the HP. All other stats of the Substitute (including type) become that of the receiver of the Substitute.

Toxic - When a Pokémon is afflicted with poisoning by Toxic, the increased poison effect can be passed on via Baton Pass if the pokemon that is coming in already has the PSN condition. It will not transfer otherwise.

Berserk Gene – Both the Confusion and Attack bonus will transfer over to the new user.

Stadium 2 Behavior
The behavior of Baton Pass in Stadium 2 is largely unchanged from Gold and Silver. The differences are as follows:

Partial trapping moves – The behavior for the using Pokémon is the same. For the Pokémon that has been trapped, there is now a significant change. When a Pokémon uses Baton Pass to escape one of these, the incoming Pokémon will have none of the secondary effect applied to it. Both the trapping and damaging aspects of these moves disappears completely with the new Pokémon.

Lock-On - Although the information is also listed under Lock-On, it is also worth noting here. Lock-On is exactly the same as it is in Gold and Silver. However, Lock-On itself is somewhat changed from Gold and Silver. In Stadium 2, Lock-On does not “bridge” when an opponent switches out normally. The effect is still maintained by Baton Pass, so it will bridge if the opponent uses Baton Pass to switch out.

Substitute – The “doll” put up by Substitute is the same image regardless of who puts it up or receives it.

Toxic – The progress level of Toxic is passed, not just the effect of incremental increases in poisoning. For clarification, take the following: If the Toxic poisoning has gotten to the level in which the next round of poisoning will take away half of the total HP meter, when Baton Pass is performed to a poisoned Pokémon, it will lose half of its total HP meter on the first round of poisoning and the level of poison will increase from there.

Berserk Gene – The state changes that are passed are the same as for the Gameboy. However, in Stadium 2 the duration of the Confusion associated with Berserk Gene is the standard Confusion duration, making this pass virtually identical to having performed a pass after getting hit by a Swagger.
