Slim Shady to Star in
'Detroit Project'
- 26th July 2001 |
|
|
A drama loosely based on
Marshall Mathers III's experience as a suburban Detroit hip-hop singer
who became a superstar, temporarily named Untitled Detroit Project,
will begin shooting in and around the city in September. Imagine
Films, producing the movie for distribution through Universal Studios,
will open a Detroit production office in early August, the Detroit
Free Press reported Wednesday. The newspaper quoted unnamed sources
close to the production, but said a Universal Studios spokesman
confirmed it. Eminem, a Grammy-winning rapper who has been widely
criticized for his violent lyrics about gays and women, will star in
the movie. Michigan Film Office Director Janet Lockwood said she has
no official confirmation that the movie will be filmed in Detroit, but
said her talks with producer Greg Goodman and director Curtis Hanson
have been very positive. The film could be released by next summer,
accompanied by a soundtrack album with at least four new songs written
by Eminem and Dr. Dre, as well as rerecorded versions of Eminem
hits. The film and soundtrack also are expected to feature an
appearance by rap group D12, of which Eminem is a member.
Representatives of Eminem did not return calls to discuss the film.

Slim
Arrives in Australia -
26th July 2001 |
|
|
American
rap star Eminem has been met by a large media contingent on his
arrival at Melbourne Airport this morning.
Flanked by security guards, Eminem was spirited away, avoiding the
media and ducking down in his car.
There was little commotion, with only a handful of fans at the airport
for his arrival at about 9.20am (AEST).
Prior to his arrival, Eminem's promoter told reporters the controversy
had been blown out of proportion.
Australian promoter Michael Gudinski said people should not take the
US rapper's lyrics too seriously as his act was mostly showbiz.
Mr Gudinski, who has said his 13-year-old daughter was not allowed to
see the rapper live, had a blunt message for critics.
"If you don't want to go to the show, don't go. It's as simple as
that," he told Channel Nine from Melbourne Airport.
"I think the controversy seems to precede him, not go with him.
"I mean, he's toured all over Europe and has toured in America
and Canada and there has been very little drama, so I'm hoping the
whole thing has been blown out of proportion."
Eminem - notorious for songs in which he ridicules homosexuals,
fantasises about raping his mother and jokes about domestic violence -
will touch down in Melbourne this morning.
He will perform in Melbourne on Thursday night and in Sydney on
Friday.
Mr Gudinski said the Australian government's delay in granting Eminem
a visa had slowed ticket sales.
But he said sales had "gone through the roof" since it was
reported the rapper could visit.
"This is now and Eminem is very, very current, and I think we are
so lucky to have an artist that is so hot around the world here right
at the right time," he said.

Not everyone
races out to the Hamptons on weekends. Just ask Mariah Carey and
Eminem. It may seem unlikely, but I heard the two music stars had a
little get-together this past weekend in Manhattan. The episode had
its origins early last month, when Carey took a private plane to
Detroit to try to persuade the rapper to appear on a video for
"Glitter", her new album.
Sources told me she waited on the Tarmac for four hours before Eminem
arrived. He listened to her pitch, the sources said, and politely said
no. But something must have clicked, because they continued their
dialogue. It's anyone's guess as to when, how and why the subject
turned personal, but something did change.
Eminem's plan, sources said, was to slip into New York on Sunday and
head straight to Carey's downtown apartment. What happened next, I
leave for others to explain. Eminem is in the middle of a nasty
divorce from Kim Mathers. His rep, Dennis Dennehey, acknowledged only
that his client and Carey "are friends".
Carey's rep, Cindi Berger, confirmed that Carey and Eminem saw each
other on Sunday, but said it was for business. "They are working
on a potential deal involving a new artist," Berger said, adding
that when Eminem arrived at Carey's, he wasn't alone. "His aunt,
uncle and five cousins were with him," she said.
Mathers of the Heart: Seems Like Mariah's Replaced Luis
Eminem's secret visit to Mariah Carey's New York apartment last
weekend may have cost the sexy singer her three-year relationship with
singer Luis Miguel. Carey and Miguel — who, sources said, have
been on and off for weeks — have been evasive about the status
of their romance since I reported Tuesday that she had entertained the
controversial Detroit rapper and several members of his family. There
is little doubt in my mind that the pop diva and the artist formerly
known as Marshall Mathers 3rd have struck up a relationship that goes
beyond business. Carey's rep denied earlier in the week that the two
had become romantically involved, and she stuck to that story
yesterday. "Mariah and Eminem have business dealings, and that's
all," said Cindi Berger. As for Miguel, a reporter from the
British tab The Sun who recently spoke to Carey said she was vague
when it came to that romance. "Right now I'm so crazed and
busy," she said, "I don't even have time for me."
Berger acknowledged that Carey and Miguel have not seen each other in
a few weeks, but blamed it on the stars' schedules

HARRISON
TOWNSHIP, Mich., 3:08 p.m. EDT July 9, 2001 -- Kimberly Mathers was
arrested Sunday in Harrison Township on an outstanding bench warrant,
according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies from the marine division responded to the area of Jefferson
and Sunnybrook on a possible accident involving a Jet Ski, according
to the sheriff's department. While checking the area, deputies
reportedly saw two women carrying life jackets, walking down
Jefferson.
After questioning and receiving verbal identification from both women,
deputies determined that they were the operators of the Jet Skis and
that they both had outstanding warrants.
Mathers was arrested on an outstanding bench warrant out of Warren,
Mich., on disturbing the peace and was transported to the Macomb
County jail, according to the sheriff's department. They said that the
other woman had an outstanding bench warrant out of Huntington Woods,
Mich., and was released at the scene per the Huntington Woods Police
Department.
After conducting a search of the back seat of the partol vehicle, a
clear baggie containing a white powdery substance of suspected cocaine
was discovered by the arresting deputy, according to the sheriff's
department.
Other charges may result pending further investigation and lab
results, the sheriff's department said.

Eminem Not
Impressed with Madonna Act -
8th July 2001 |
|
|
While she
continues to shock and offend some with her new tour, in which she
simulates killing a man onstage, Madonna is boring one musical
colleague, reports Mr. Showbiz.
You'd think Eminem -- with his offensive and often violent lyrics --
would get a kick out of Madonna's act, which includes her grabbing a
rifle to take out a male dancer who has been harassing her during the
song What It Feels Like for a Girl.
But the venomous rapper says of the pop icon's Drowned World Tour
performances: ``I wasn't impressed with her recent live shows. I'd
rather sit in a dentist's chair.''
Madonna's video for the song, directed by husband Guy Ritchie of Lock,
Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels fame, was deemed too violent to be put
into rotation by MTV and VH1.
``Madonna hasn't explained what her intentions are in the show,'' her
rep, Liz Rosenberg, tells the New York Daily News. ``The man she
shoots was abusive to her earlier on. There's a thread that runs
through the show about women and power. It's operatic.''
Rosenberg adds: ``I don't think she's advocating violence as a
solution to domestic abuse. But when Madonna has a message, she's not
afraid of the consequences of those who might not agree.''
As for Eminem's thumbs-down, Rosenberg says, ``God bless him.''

Eminem's
Detroit crew D12 want listeners to know on their debut album that
their artistic license use is not reflective of their personal
beliefs. The soon to be released Devil's Night, opens with a caveat to
warn audiences that if certain words offend them, they should not
listen to the album. Group member Bizarre shared some of Devil's Night
's subject matter with MTVNews. " "I say that I'm picking up
transvestites on my Harley-Davidson in one of my raps, there's no
barriers. You can't say that we're faggot bashers, you can't say that
we like gays, you can't say nothing about us, 'cause we're not scared
to trip on any subject. How can we hate fags with Bizarre saying shit
like that? It's all in fun, and that's how it should be." Dr. Dre,
Eminem, DJ Head, and D12 member Ken Artis all did production work on
the LP. The Dre-produced track, " Ain't Nuttin' But Music"
bashes a variety of celebrities including Whitney Houston, Jesse
Jackson, Baha Men, George Michael, Everlast, and others. The group has
been together since 1994 and they made a pact that whoever got signed
first would come back and help the others. Bizarre says they will be
in the studio later this week to begin work on the follow-up to this
album. They plan to release one album every year from now on. D12 will
go on the Warped Tour next month and venture overseas in late August

LISTENING to
Eminem helps children to channel their rebellion, according to a
psychologist.
Hannes Niggenaber claims the rapper's pro-drugs and alcohol songs are
harmless.
He said teenagers need "bad boy" figures such as Eminem.
The German professor told the Daily Record: "Kids need rebellion.
If they don't dare to rebel themselves, they let bad boys like Eminem
do it.
"Parents want their kids to idolise scientists or sports stars,
but kids laugh at that idea and look for role models who fit in with
their own state of mind, idols who they can look up to." |
