Biography of Edward A. Brabender

This is the Page for Corporal Edward A. Brabender, Company A, 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, "Birney's Zouaves. Edward was the son of Jacob Ambrosia Brabender and Sarah Stough. He was born in 1841 in Mill Creek ,Erie County Pennsylvania. He was a Shoemaker by Trade in Philadelphia who fought in the Civil War. Edward was mustered into Service on August 8th 1861 and placed in Company A as a Private. He and his Company were sent to Washington D. C. on September 8th 1861 and placed in Camp Graham as a part of the Defences of Washington in case of a Rebel attack. In March they were sent by steamer to The Virginia Peninsula where on May 31st 1862 he was shot in the ankle at the Battle of Fair Oaks (Seven Pines). Though injured, he continued on in service and again was wounded a second time at the Battle of 2nd Fredericksburg on May 3rd 1863 while charging Marye's Height's. Unable to continue, he was mustered out on June 1st 1863 and returned home to Philadelphia. He no doubt read the news of the attack just 110 miles away in Gettysburg, one month later. His first wife was Emmeline Brabender. Edward A. Brabender died on February 8th 1905 and is buried at St. Peters German Redemptionist Cemetery in Philadelphia.
