Biography of John W. Crosby

This is the Page for Capt. John W. Crosby of the 23rd PA Volunteers. John was born in Philadelphia in 1825. He was mustered into service for the Civil War on August 18th 1861 as the Captain of Company A of the 23rd PA Volunteers, 3 Years Volunteers. He was transferred to Company P and ten in March of 1862, Company P was transferred to the Sixty First Pennsylvania Volunteers. While serving with the 61st PA, He was killed in action at the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia on April 2nd 1865. He was buried at Philanthropic Cemetery in Philadelphia which was later removed to Arlington Cemetery in Drexel hill, PA. All of the bodies were dumped into a mass grave and not marked.
